Exclusive: Liverpool Push to Seal £40m Deal for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi in January

Liverpool is looking to secure Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi in January after a failed attempt on deadline day. The fee is expected to be £35-40million, with Palace willing to sell to boost their squad. The deal would also include a ten per cent sell-on fee. Guehi has been a key player for Palace, having played 139 times in the Premier League.

Liverpool are working hard behind the scenes to put a package in place to land Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi at the second time of asking, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Sought-after centre-back Guehi was due to join the Reds on transfer deadline day until the Eagles pulled the plug on a last minute deal because boss Oliver Glasner deemed his side didn’t have enough defensive cover.

But that hasn’t put off the Premier League champions who, we understood, have been trying to make sure everything is in place to resurrect the deal when the January transfer window opens.

Reports have been circulating that Liverpool have no interest in trying to resurrect a deal to sign Guehi, but SportsBoom understands these are wide of the mark.

And a fee of £35-40milliom is looking like what will be required for Palace to part company with Guehi, one of their most influential players.

Last year’s FA Cup winners sold star playmaker Eberechi Eze to Arsenal in the summer in a deal worth £60m plus £8m in add-ons.

And although the Eagles are loathed to lose Guehi as well in the space of six months, the club are happy to sell knowing they will have financial power to strengthen when the window opens.

SQUAD INVESTMENT

Palace wasted no time in bolstering their squad following Eze’s departure to the Gunners, with money invested in winger Yeremy Pino and centre-back Jaydee Canvot.

But it is understood German boss Glasner is keen to add more signings to his squad, with the sale of Guehi providing welcome cash for those pursuits.

If Palace do sell as expected then they will also be guaranteed a ten per cent sell-on fee if he were to leave Liverpool in the future, another added incentive to get a deal done.

Capped 25 times by England, Guehi’s stock has risen in the past 18 months after some starring performances at the back for the Eagles.

The former Chelsea man has played 139 times for the club in the Premier League and is enjoying playing in Europe this season with the south London outfit.
