Gillingham will offer Jonny Williams a new contract to extend his stay at the club in the coming months, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The former Wales international signed for the club after being released by Swindon Town in 2023.

Born in Kent, Williams was well travelled before joining the Gills and our sources have been told the midfielder is happy at the ambitious club, who are chasing League Two promotion this season.

An experienced voice in the changing room, Williams is part of Gareth Ainsworth’s leadership group.

His career at Priestfield was saved when Ainsworth came in as he was swiftly drafted back into team after being left on the sidelines by the previous regime.

Williams produced a player of the match performance in Ainsworth’s first home game in charge and has not looked back.

Perfect Match

The former Crystal Palace player enjoys Ainsworth’s “no blame culture” and has labelled his boss as a “Swiss army knife."

And our sources understand he will be given a new contract at the club.

Aged 31, Williams is still an influential player in the Gillingham engine room and has featured in eight of their ten league games so far this season, playing almost every minute of their last four.

When he signed for the club, Williams said: “I am really excited, this is a club with a lot of potential. I was born in Kent so I am delighted to be home.”

“I have always looked out for Gillingham's results, it's a big club in League 2. I've got a lot to give, the Chairman is great and I want to be a part of the journey.”

The highlights of Williams career include playing for Wales at the 2016 European Championship as well as helping Palace reach the Premier League through the play-offs in 2013 and winning the League One play-offs with Charlton Athletic in 2019.
