Coventry City will commence contract talks with Haji Wright over extending his stay with the club, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Sky Blues’ star striker has been on fire so far this season, scoring in five straight games at one stage.
USA International Wright is contracted to the club until the summer of 2027.
But our sources have been told Coventry chiefs want to avoid their talisman entering the final year of his current deal at the club.
Boss Frank Lampard only got to work with the 27-year-old for half of the season last term due to injury struggles.
But the Chelsea legend has been mightily impressed by what he has seen from the imposing forward so far this season.
His six goals in nine appearances in all competitions has helped fire the Sky Blues into the early promotion race.
And Lampard said: “There’s a really good energy about Haji at the moment and he’s a very, very good player.”
“So we’re happy to have him and I hope we’ll push that and that he remains as consistent in how he started the season because he’s shown already what I believed in him anyway.”
Record Signing
Wright penned a four-year deal when he joined the club as their record signing, for a fee in the region of £7.5million, in 2023.
During his time at the CBS Arena he has been a regular goal getter with 37 goals in 90 appearances for the club, an impressive 19 of those coming in his first season as the Sky Blues memorably reached the FA Cup semi-finals, narrowly losing to Manchester United.
Earlier in his career, Wright made his mark in the Danish Superliga where he scored 11 goals in 29 games for SønderjyskE in the 2020/21 season.
He failed to report for pre-season training the following summer and moved to Turkish side Antalyaspor on loan with an option to buy.
During his two seasons at the club he bagged 31 goals in 64 games before becoming Coventry’s record signing.
Editor's Insight
The decision by Coventry to lock Wright down is a tactic to safeguard their record investment before his market value is lost due when he enters his final year of his contract. It is a typical example of why loss aversion applies to football; the fear of the price-tag of a star asset falling in the last year of a contract can often compel a club to act, even if it means paying a higher salary earlier than required.
