    Major Snooker Tournaments

    The World Snooker Championship

The biggest tournament in snooker is the World Snooker Championship, a 17-day test of skill, stamina, and endurance, held at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield in late April through May.

32 players face off with one crowning themselves the world champion as a result, banking £500,000. Many professionals say that the history of the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield adds to the atmosphere, stating that no pressure is felt more than when the tournament reaches a one-table setup.

    The UK Championship

The second biggest and oldest ranking event is unquestionably the UK Championship, a “triple crown” tournament held in November in the famous UK city of York. The UK Championship’s history sees the tournament being shown at the Barbican Theatre.

The winner pockets £250,000, and the quick format means players must produce their “A” game every time they step out in the arena. Matches are best-of-11 frames until the final, before playing a best-of-19 match to decide the winner.

    The Masters

Completing the triple crown tournaments, the Masters is held at the iconic Alexandra Palace every year, where the top 16 players in the world compete at the largest non-ranking exhibition. The winner earns £350,000, and the format is the same as the UK Championship.

It is the second-longest-running tournament after the World Championship and is widely considered one of the tournaments every professional would love to add to their trophy cabinet.

Snooker Legends In UK – Icons of the Sport

    Ronnie O’Sullivan

Ronnie O’Sullivan is the sport’s most decorated, and widely considered the greatest too. O’Sullivan holds the records for most ranking and triple crown tournaments. He has displayed incredible longevity considering past battles with depression and drug usage, after turning professional in 1992.

    Stephen Hendry

Stephen Hendry was one of the game’s biggest pioneers, considering the game is attacking nature as it is now. Hendry’s ruthless approach to the game made him a serial ranking winner, including seven World Championship titles. The Scotsman won five in a row from 1993-1996.

    Steve Davis

Steve Davis was another trailblazer in our sport, winning six World championship titles in the 1980s and helping grow the sport’s popularity at its peak. Davis earned an MBE for his services to the game and became the first player to hit a televised maximum 147 break.

    The Future of Snooker

The future of snooker will see the rise of young talents around the world joining the circuit, adding to the globalization of the sport. The sport needs bold personalities who can draw people in.

One talking point is the future of the World Snooker Championship, given that its current contract with Sheffield ends in 2027. With talk of moves abroad permanently or even on a rotating basis, players will have different opinions on where they want the tournament hosted.

    A Brief History of Snooker

Snooker was first played by British Army officers stationed in India in the 1800s, starting in 1875. The rules were made by army officer Neville Chamberlain, and the game in its early beginnings was known as a “gentleman’s sport.”

The first official snooker competition took place in 1916 before the first World Championship commenced in 1927. The BBC popularised the game further by making it accessible to all those who had a television at the time.

Now snooker has a sanctioned tour with professionals, dubbed the World Snooker Tour, who host multiple tournaments around the world.
