Former Everton and Burnley boss Sean Dyche is a shock candidate to become the new Luton Town boss, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Our sources have learnt the Hatters have made tentative enquiries about whether Dyche would consider taking over at Kenilworth Road.

The Hatters sacked former manager Matt Bloomfield on Monday after a harrowing start to the new League One season.

Former Swansea City boss Luke Williams has been heavily linked with the vacancy, as has Bolton manager Ian Evetts and Russell Martin, recently sacked by Rangers.

But SportsBoom understands Dyche is the Hatters’ leading candidate and the Bedfordshire club are hopeful they can tempt the 54-year-old back into management after nearly a ten-month absence from the professional game.

Dyche was sacked by Everton in January after just short of two years in charge, with David Moyes brought back for a second time to manage the club.

However, the Hatters know it would take a special package to try and entice Dyche to the club.

A drop of two divisions would likely be a tough pill to swallow for Dyche, but the Hatters have aspirations of promotion this season and, ultimately, gunning for a return to the Premier League in the next three seasons.

MARQUEE APPOINTMENT

And our sources understand the club believe a marquee appointment like Dyche would be the perfect statement of intent for their ambitious plans moving forward.

Last season Bloomfield oversaw a run of just two defeats in 11 matches having joined from Wycombe Wanderers, but the club were still relegated from the Championship.

But this season the Hatters’ former has been woeful in the third tier, with five defeats from their opening 11 league fixtures to leave them frustratingly hovering in mid-table.

Alex Lawless has taken temporary charge of the team, with coaching staff Paul Benson, Kevin Foley and Kevin Pilkington helping until Bloomfield’s permanent successor is found.
