Championship newcomers Wrexham are lining up a move to sign former England midfielder Dele Alli on a free transfer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Our sources have discovered the Red Dragons and Alli’s representatives have opened dialogue about a deal for this season.
The former Tottenham Hotspur ace, capped 37 times by his country, was released by Italian side Como this summer after club and player mutually agreed to terminate his contract.
The 29-year-old was immediately linked with a move to another former club, Everton, with a number of Championship clubs having also made initial enquiries about the possibility of signing him.
But now Wrexham, with their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, having given boss Phil Parkinson the green light to see if he can pull of a mayor coup and sign the former England pin-up.
Alli played 181 games for Spurs in the Premier League cross seven seasons for the North London club.
ITALIAN JOB
He left in 2021 to join Everton but managed just 13 league games in three seasons and signed for Como, under the management of former Spain and Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas.
However, Alli played only one game for the club before Fabregas and the player decided the best option would be for him to move on.
Previously one of the Premier League’s brightest prospects, Alli has unexpectedly failed to live up to the high expectations thrust upon him from a young age.
But at 29 the midfielder is still confident he can make a comeback and has plenty of offer, especially in the second tier as he looks to get his career back on track.
Alli has candidly spoken of his mental health issues and how they have impacted his professional career.
The midfielder has scored 94 goals in 386 career appearances, having started his career with Milton Keynes Dons.
