Connor Wickham is holding out for a Football League deal, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal. In the meantime, those looking to stay engaged with the latest fixtures and action can explore the best football betting sites in the UK for current offers.
Our sources have been told that the 32-year-old striker has been approached by a number of non-league clubs this summer.
But sources close to the player have told us Wickham, who has played at the highest level in the Premier League, is waiting to see if any clubs come in for him after missing out on their preferred targets during the transfer window.
Clubs will now dive into the free agent market after the window slammed shut on Monday evening.
The former England age group international spent a spell earlier this summer training with League Two Bromley, who decided against offering him a contract at the club.
Wickham, who played with the likes of Wilfried Zaha, has been plagued by injuries at stages during his career, which includes an FA Cup runners-up medal.
The ex-Crystal Palace hitman has been a free agent since being released by Charlton Athletic in 2024, as the club, now in the Championship, avoided relegation from League One.
Earlier this year, Wickham was a part of Watford’s U21 squad and trained with the club’s academy in order to get himself fit.
And he is desperate to continue his career in the Football League and believes he still has plenty of offer given his experience at the top level.
Experienced Head
Wickham, who has made 120 appearances in the Premier League, has spent the summer at the Professional Football Association’s training camps in preparation for getting himself a club for the new season.
Since 2022, Wickham has signed short-term deals at MK Dons, Forest Green Rovers, Cardiff City and Charlton.
Wickham, who has 19 top-flight goals on his CV, has netted 25 times in 113 Championship appearances.
The striker joined Sunderland from Ipswich Town for £8million in 2011, scoring 15 times in 91 games signing a five-year deal at Crystal Palace in 2015.
