Sheffield United have made enquiries about trying to sign former England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

And our sources understand Hull City have also made contact with the player’s representatives with the view to potentially signing the ex-Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder on a free transfer.

Shelvey, 33, joined Burnley last season on a short-term deal but was released by the Clarets at the end of the season following promotion back to the Premier League.

But now the Blades and Tigers are seeing whether they can carve out a deal to sign the five-cap international.

Shelvey had been training with the Tigers earlier this season with a view to earning a permanent deal and extending his distinguished career.

However, the Romford-born central midfielder is now being courted by the Blades, who have made a dreadful start to the new season and who are rooted to the bottom of the Championship table.

BAGS OF EXPERIENCE

Shelvey only played twice for the Clarets last season but has bags of experience having enjoyed no fewer than 14 seasons in the Premier League throughout his career with various clubs.

He spent three seasons with Liverpool from between 2010-13 and then played three seasons with Swansea City in the top-flight.

But he arguably enjoyed his best football with the Magpies during a productive eight-year spell from signing in 2015 until his departure in 2023.

He featured in the 2016-17 Championship Team of the Season, playing a key role in helping the club win the league and Premier League promotion.

Shelvey scored 18 goals for the Magpies and played 186 games for the club during his stay at St James’ Park.

The midfielder had a brief spell with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League before spells with Turkish Super Lig sides Caykur Rizepor and Eyupspor respectively, before Burnley boss Scott Parker signed him last season to help solidify their ultimately successful promotion push.
