Exclusive: Stockport County Interested in Signing Former Wales International Tom Lawrence For Championship Promotion Push
Stockport County are interested in signing former Wales international and free agent Tom Lawrence, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Hatters are gunning to win promotion to the Championship this season having just missed out by a whisker last term.
And Hatters boss Dave Challinor is understood to be a big fan of the 23-cap international forward.
Lawrence has previously been linked with a move to hometown club Wrexham, as well as a potential move back to Scotland, but no deal materialised before the transfer window shut.
A proven goalscorer, 31-year-old Lawrence started his career with Manchester United before playing for a string of clubs including Rangers, Derby County, Ipswich Town, Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers, Rotherham United, Leicester City, Yeovil Town and Carlisle United during an impressive career.
He latterly played for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, scoring 11 goals and playing 65 times for the Glasgow outfit during his three-year tenure at Ibrox.
Lawrence was one of three players released by Rangers at the end of last season, alongside Leon Balogun and Ianis Hagi.
PATIENTLY WAITING
But both Balogun and Hagi both signed for new clubs following their departure, while Lawrence has been forced to wait patiently for a deal to materialise.
West Brom and Coventry City were also two clubs who were linked with a move for the attacking midfielder, but it has so far proved to be a frustrating few months for Lawrence has he looks to land a new home.
Lawrence won the Scottish League Cup with Rangers and has played 170 games in the English Championship, experience which Stockport could benefit from it a contract is agreed.
However, Lawrence’s career has not all been plain sailing and he was arrested back in 2019 on suspicion of drink-driving whilst club captain of former club Derby.
He pleaded guilty to drink driving, was fined six weeks’ wages and ordered to serve 80 hours of community service as part of a rehabilitation process.
Lawrenc left the Rams in 2022 after five seasons in Championship and joined Rangers.
