Tranmere Rovers will turn to an old boy to confirm the club’s Football League status, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The Prenton Park outfit ended Andy Crosby’s 10-month tenure last week with the club sliding towards a League Two relegation battle after a woeful run of results.

Now, our sources understand they’re expected to talk to former striker Ryan Lowe about a short-term role with a view to a longer-term deal if Rovers retain their place in SkyBet League Two.

Lowe was sacked as Wigan chief last month following a 6-1 hiding to Peterborough, bringing down the curtain on his 11-month stint in the hot seat.

Previously at Bury, Preston and Plymouth, Liverpudlian Lowe spent one season on the Wirral as a player.

In that time though he plundered 19 goals in 45 games to make a positive impressive on the fans.

Tranmere sit seven points off the bottom two. And recent form has given cause for alarm among the Rovers board.

Key Appointment

And with supporters losing faith with Crosby after a run of 10 defeats in 11 games, including a loss to relegation rivals, Newport County, chairman Mark Palios, who is trying to sell the club, decided to act.

Andy Parkinson, together with Connor Jennings and Joe Murphy, took over on an interim basis for Saturday’s visit of Oldham Athletic.

That fixture saw the return of former Rovers’ boss Micky Mellon who, successfully gained promotion with Latics from the National League at the end of last season.

Former Halifax, Barrow and Fleetwood manager Pete Wild is also under consideration.

Wild is out of work since losing his job at Fleetwood at the end of January but previously helped stabilised the Lancashire club after succeeding Charlie Adam.

And he took Barrow to the verge of a first ever play-off appearance before a late season fade out edged them out of the picture.

Accrington assistant Ged Brannan is a Tranmere favourite from his playing days and would be a popular appointment among many supporters.
