Bosses are looking at a trio of experienced candidates for Rotherham’s rebuild, SportsBoom have exclusively reveal.
Matt Hamshaw was finally put out of his misery earlier this week after being hammered 5-0 at Peterborough United.
After losing seven games in a row around the turn of the year, things started to look up for the Millers with seven points from nine.
But they are currently six points shy of safety with nine games to go following a run of nine points from a possible 27.
The club moved quickly to appoint Lee Clark until the end of the season as they try to avoid the drop.
Clark is a left-field pick given he announced his retirement in 2023 and the last time he managed in England was with Bury back in 2017.
His previous three roles were in the Middle East in Sudan and Oman.
But appointing Clark gives Tony Stewart and the club’s board time to try and find the right man going forward as they search for their sixth manager since Paul Warne left the club in 2022.
Looking To Future
It is understood the Millers’ board know a rebuild is in order whether they manage to avoid relegation to League Two, where they would be playing for the first time since 2013, or not.
The club were playing Championship football just two seasons ago and in a sorry turn of events could be back in the fourth tier.
Our sources have been told Darren Moore, Darrell Clarke and Darren Ferguson are three names who have been discussed.
Moore’s last job was at Port Vale, where he was sacked at the end of the year, and he has managed in Yorkshire three times previously with Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town with promotions in Leagues One and Two to his name.
Clarke, also out of work since December, has two League Two promotions on his CV with Bristol Rovers and Port Vale.
Ferguson enjoyed four separate spells at Peterborough, and a long stint with Doncaster Rovers, with three League One promotions, a League Two promotions and a hat-trick of EFL Trophy wins to his name.

Shane is a seasoned sports journalist and one of the most recognisable voices in the snooker pressroom. From Ronnie O’Sullivan to Zhao Xintong, he has sat down with the sport’s biggest names and broken hundreds of front-page national stories.
Alongside his work for SportsBoom, Shane regularly freelances for national outlets including the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, and Daily Star.
While cricket is Shane’s true passion, particularly Test cricket, he keeps it largely separate from his professional work. But don’t expect him to be sold on The Hundred as the future of the game.
