Exclusive: Darren Moore On Rotherham Radar As Millers Fight To Avoid League Two

Struggling Rotherham United are considering replacing manager Matt Hamshaw with Yorkshire veteran Darren Moore, eyes former Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield boss to save them from relegation. Other candidates include Darrell Clarke. Hamshaw's job hangs by a thread as Rotherham face Plymouth this weekend after 12 losses in 15 games.

Relegation threatened Rotherham United are eyeing up a man well known in Yorkshire management circles if they axe under fire Matt Hamshaw, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The Millers’ boss is clinging to his position after Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat to local rivals Bradford City.

Rotherham sit second bottom of League One, five points from safety.

Hamshaw signed a three-year contract at the New York Stadium last April. But in order to preserve their third-tier status Rotherham might now show the home grown 44-year-old the door.

That could pave the way for Darren Moore to take up a new job. And potentially a move to a fourth Yorkshire club.

Experienced Head

Famously, Moore guided Sheffield Wednesday to promotion to the Championship in 2023 courtesy of a play-off final win over Barnsley.

Almost as striking was the Owls’ semi-final victory over Peterborough, overturning a 4-0 first leg, semi-final deficit to reach Wembley on penalties in the second leg.

Moore left Wednesday to take over at Huddersfield for an unhappy four-month spell that saw the Terriers fall into the relegation places.

He remained a wanted man and despite relegation to League Two in his first season at Port Vale, 51-year-old Moore guided the Potteries club back to League One 12 months later.

That upward momentum couldn’t be sustained, however, and he parted company with Vale last December.

Moore has also managed at Doncaster and West Brom with varying degrees of success. The Baggies were fourth in the Championship when he was dismissed.

Another former Port Vale manager, Darrell Clarke, is also understood to be in the frame should Hamshaw get the boot.

In the meantime, Hamshaw is fighting on, preparing to host in-form Plymouth on Saturday and looking to avoid a fifth successive defeat. In total, Rotherham have lost 12 of their last 15 matches in all competitions.
