Ross Barkley could find a new home at Coventry City next season if and when the Sky Blues clinch promotion to the Premier League, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Despite their success so far and promotion agonisingly within touching distance, Lampard’s squad will need a summer overhaul for any future top flight campaign.
Lampard was one of England’s finest ever midfielders. And while 32-year-old Liverpudlian Barkley hasn’t reached the same heights as his former Chelsea manager, his experience would be invaluable to Coventry in the Premier League.
The ex-England international is currently a bit part player at Aston Villa but is contracted until the end of 2027, having recently triggered a contract extension.
Despite that Villa will be open to offers for a player who has appeared for a host of clubs since breaking through at Everton.
Chelsea paid £15 million for his services in 2018 and he helped the Stamford Bridge club win a number of trophies including the FA Cup and Europa League.
Lampard Looks To Experienced Heads
Capped 33 times by his country, Barkley had loans at Villa, Nice and Luton Town before returning to Villa Park in 2024 for an undisclosed fee.
He has scored two Premier League goals for the club this season with his second strike coming as he returned to the starting line-up during the defeat at Manchester United at the weekend.
Coventry’s Championship rivals, Sheffield United, considered a January transfer window move for Barkley while Everton have been linked with a romantic return for one of their former heroes.
However, Toffees insiders say previous talk of a possible move for Barkley is just that and won’t be entertained by manager David Moyes.
Wrexham have been monitoring Barkley’s output. But it is understood if Phil Parkinson does mastermind a remarkable fourth successive promotion to the Premier League, the Welsh side will recruit A list stars to match their newly acquired status.
