Having been transferred from the Vélez Sarsfield academy for approximately €8 million and signed with Botafogo until December 31, 2029, Álvaro Montoro is currently navigating one of the most critical turning points of his career.

Despite being just 18 years old, the young star, noted for both his technical intelligence and his ability to take responsibility in high-pressure moments, has become a "top-tier priority" target for Premier League talent spotters.

Scouting Tribune

Montoro’s memorable performance in the match against Gremio last February has ignited the interest of Premier League clubs.

Scouts from renowned Premier League recruitment networks, including Brighton & Hove Albion, and AFC Bournemouth followed the young winger live from the stands during the Gremio fixture.

Despite Botafogo’s 5-3 defeat, Montoro stood out as the star of the pitch, earning a "high potential" notation after registering an assist. Throughout the match, he functioned as the engine of the attack with successful dribbles and key passes in the final third.

Brighton’s scouting focus isn’t limited to South America, with the Seagulls also tracking in-form RB Leipzig playmaker Christoph Baumgartner, highlighting the club’s intent to reinforce multiple positions ahead of next season.

Technical Observations

Standing at 1.70 meters, Montoro is more agile than his opponents and operates at an elite level regarding ball retention in tight spaces and taking players on.

Although he appears physically smaller than his markers, his balance in duels is one of the features that impressed observers the most.

In addition, despite his youth, his scanning ability is remarkably advanced. His habit of checking his surroundings before receiving the ball to channel the play in the most effective direction indicates an "innate vision" of the pitch.

The most prominent cautionary note in reports is his physical strength. It is noted that he must increase his upper-body resistance to remain upright against robust Premier League defenders. Furthermore, it is projected that he will become even more unpredictable if he increases the frequency of using his left foot.

Club Stance and Transfer Strategy

The Botafogo hierarchy plans to retain the player for now, waiting for his development to mature before entertaining bids in the €30M–€40 million range.

However, it is known that Premier League sides are preparing to knock on the door with an "early reservation" strategy.

While no formal bid has reached the club yet, there are rumours that Brighton is discussing a "strategic partnership" with Botafogo to monitor the player’s progression. Additionally, a strong insider scenario suggests that owner John Textor may use the player as a stepping stone to his other club, Olympique Lyonnais, in the future.

Analytical Verdict: Potential Scenarios

As the undisputed leader of the South American market, Brighton could sign Montoro and leave him on loan at Botafogo for another season to allow for full physical maturation.

His performance in the FIFA Club World Cup at the end of 2025 could double his market value overnight. This possibility may lead Botafogo to shift a potential sale from the summer window to the winter window.

With his assist and technical masterclass against Gremio, Montoro has become a new darling of Premier League scouts. The summer of 2026 could be the launchpad for this young gem’s journey to European football.
