Gary Caldwell’s appointment as Wigan manager could herald a permanent move for highly rated midfielder Ryan Trevitt, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The 22-year-old is currently on a season long loan to the League One strugglers from Brentford.

But unlucky Trevitt hasn’t featured for the Latics since suffering a serious thigh injury against Cardiff City last September. He has since had surgery to correct a hernia issue.

Former Tics boss Ryan Lowe, who described the player as “fantastic” was hopeful the London born prospect would play some part in the current campaign.

And certainly Caldwell, about to embark on his first match as Lowe’s successor, is hoping Trevitt can make a full recovery before the end of the season.

Trevitt, who had trials at Chelsea as a youngster and was also on Fulham’s books, has had two previous loan spells under Caldwell when the Scot was in charge at Exeter City.

He first moved to St James Park in 2023 for six months. He returned last January until the end of the season.

Indeed, the player, who made a Premier League debut for the Bees as a substitute against Spurs in 2024 plus appearances in the FA and Carabao Cups, is on record as stating: “I owe a lot to Gary Caldwell."

“He’s a great manager and I warmed to him really quickly.”

Trevitt is coming to the end of his three-year deal at Brentford though the club has the option for an additional year.

It remains to be seen if the one-time Leatherhead star wants to swap the Premier League for the game’s third tier.

Certainly, any chance of joining Wigan permanently is dependent on the Greater Manchester club not dropping down to Skybet League Two.

But because of his links to Caldwell, it seems likely he will be back at Wigan in some capacity next season.
