Wrexham and Derby County are among a number of clubs monitoring Todd Cantwell’s situation at Blackburn Rovers ahead of a summer swoop, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
As exclusively revealed by SportsBoom back in November, Rovers have offered their playmaker a contract extension.
Rudy Gestede, who is Head of Football Operations at Ewood Park, has since said: “We have offered Todd Cantwell and Balazs Toth the highest wages we can in terms of our wage structure, but they are not interested. We simply cannot compete.”
And with the former Norwich City ace’s contract only having a year left to run when the current campaign comes to a close, suitors are queuing up for Cantwell’s signature.
It is understood both Wrexham and Derby are huge admirers of the 27-year-old, who was a two-time Championship winner with the Canaries.
Rangers’ boss Danny Röhl is also understood to be keen on the player and is ready to push for a Rangers return for the attacking midfielder.
Cantwell spent 18 months at Ibrox, during which time he helped the club win a Scottish League Cup trophy, before moving to Lancashire.
Rovers Woes
Rovers are in a relegation dogfight to maintain their Championship status, but are facing worries both on and off the pitch as they struggle to tie down their stars.
It is a worrying trend which has culminated in them losing a number of influential players for free in recent years.
And that is why clubs are circling for Cantwell this summer with Rovers chiefs desperate to secure a fee for their assets who do not want to commit their futures to the club.
Last summer's transfer window saw the loss of talismanic trio Travis, Callum Brittain and Dominic Hyam who were entering their final years.
Tyrhys Dolan (Espanyol), Danny Batth and Andreas Weimann (both Derby) were three other influential players who left for free.
Editor's Insight
The fact that Wrexham and Rangers are both interested in Cantwell how quickly transfer markets can develop. Whilst managers must move quickly in these situations, it's the odds compiler that needs to ensure they're ahead of the market.
