Championship leaders Coventry City will offer keeper Carl Rushworth a new permanent home, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Rushworth’s form has played a major part in the Sky Blues' success this season but is due back at parent club Brighton at the end of the campaign.
The 24-year-old Yorkshireman kept a 14th clean sheet in his 37th appearance for Frank Lampard’s side as City whitewashed Preston North End 3-0 on Wednesday night, a sixth straight league win.
Only Middlesbrough have conceded fewer goals than Coventry’s 38 in the second tier this term.
Rushworth hasn’t played a senior game for the Seagulls since joining them from home town club Halifax Town in 2019.
And he’s honed his soccer education during loan spells at Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea City, Hull City and latterly Coventry.
But with ambitions to play in the Premier League and ultimately challenge for an England place, it’s understood Rushworth wants to become a permanent fixture at a club rather than a repeated ‘gloves for hire’ loanee.
Now he is set to do both with the East Midlands club. In-form Coventry are eight points clear of second placed Middlesbrough and nine ahead of third placed Millwall.
It’s not just the goalkeeping spot Coventry are looking to secure for a potential Premier League return. SportsBoom sources have recently revealed scouts have been sent to watch Shakhtar Donetsk winger Prosper Obah.
PL Dream For Rushworth?
Having overcome a three-game winless run during January and February, City are flying towards a top flight return for the first time since 2001.
And with the extra riches accrued for reaching the Premier League, Coventry will be happy to meet Albion’s valuation of around £10million.
Rushworth, who was on West Ham’s radar previously, is contracted to the south coast side until 2027 with a club option of an additional year.
The only stumbling block could be if Brighton’s current number one, Bart Verbruggen is poached himself.
Dutch shot stopper Verbruggen was linked with Newcastle United earlier this season as well as Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
