Former England and Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli is at the centre of a Championship transfer tug-of-war, with West Bromwich Albion lining up a dramatic move for the out-of-favour midfielder, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The 29-year-old is fighting to resurrect his career after a turbulent few seasons, and has been training back at Tottenham in a bid to rebuild fitness and sharpness ahead of a potential return to action.
West Brom are seriously considering a swoop for Alli this summer, but any move depends on whether then can avoid Championship relegation.
The Baggies are currently hovering just above the drop zone. Club insiders remain confident they can retain their Championship status, but any move for Alli will depend on survival.
And they are not alone in the chase. Blackburn Rovers have also made initial enquiries for the former England midfielder, setting up a potential scrap for a player desperate to prove he still belongs at the top end of the game.
He was shockingly linked with a return to his boyhood club MK Dons earlier this year, but the move never materialised, with wages reportedly proving the sticking point.
FALL FROM GRACE
Alli’s fall from grace has been stark. Once one of Europe’s most feared attacking midfielders, he dazzled during seven seasons at Tottenham and played a key role in their run to the UEFA Champions League Final 2019.
He also shone for England, earning 37 caps and becoming a mainstay in the national side during the early stages of his career.
But spells with Everton and Beşiktaş failed to reignite his spark, while injuries and inconsistency derailed his momentum.
A brief stint with Italian outfit Como brought little reward, with Alli making just one appearance before becoming a free agent.
With 94 goals in 386 career appearances, Alli still boasts a CV few at Championship level can match, and those close to the player insist he remains determined to rediscover the form that once made him one of England’s brightest stars.
Now nearing full fitness and available on a free transfer, Alli represents a low-risk, potentially high-reward gamble.
And for the player, this could be the last chance to complete a remarkable comeback.
