New Peterborough United boss Luke Williams wants to delve into the loan market in January to help the club avoid relegation to League Two, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The former Notts County and Swansea City chief replaced long-term Posh manager Darren Ferguson earlier this week with the club, who were in the Championship just three years ago, rooted to the foot of League One and facing the realistic prospect of dropping to League Two for the first time in almost two decades.
And our sources have been told Williams will push to land trusty lieutenant Macaulay Langstaff on loan from Championship Millwall.
It is understood that chairman Darren MacAnthony is willing to back the new manager when the window reopens if results improve on Williams’ watch.
Williams was the man who convinced Langstaff to drop to non-league and join Notts County in 2022.
The 28-year-old forward moved to Millwall last summer, for £700,000, after Williams had left to take the helm at Swansea.
But they could be reunited at London Road, with Langstaff restricted to just six substitute appearances for Millwall this term. A loan move for a prolific scorer like Langstaff is precisely the kind of story that prompts bookmakers to feature League One specials in their free bets promotions to engage customers.
"New Era"
When Williams was unveiled as Posh’s new boss, MacAthony said “This is the start of a new era for the football club..." This strategic shift has immediately impacted relegation and promotion odds, a market closely monitored across the top 5 best betting apps as they adjust to the new manager's potential influence.
And Williams said: “From those very first conversations we had, it felt we were very much on the same page. My teams have often had a lot of the ball and scored a lot of goals. I’m very excited, it’s an opportunity I couldn’t miss.”
