Ange Postecoglou is being lined up for a sensational return to Celtic, SportsBoom can reveal.
Brendan Rodgers resigned from the role on Monday, with club legend Martin O’Neill and former player Shaun Maloney taking interim charge.
Postecoglou was sacked by Premier League Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season despite delivering the club’s first title in 17 years by winning the Europa League in his second season in charge.
He then suffered an ill-fated spell in charge of Nottingham Forest where he won none of his eight games after replacing Nuno Espírito Santo.
Postecoglou is a popular figure at Celtic and would be a well liked appointment among the fanbase.
Our sources have been told major shareholder Dermot Desmond is desperate for the Australian to return to the club and he is expected to imminently reach out to Postecoglou.
Celtic are currently eight points behind Hearts in the title race.
During his first spell at the club, Postecoglou won double in the 2021/22 season and followed it up with a treble the following season before moving to Spurs.
A Sorry End
Rodgers left Celtic Park after a 3-1 defeat to leaders Hearts, which was a third loss in five games.
But a departure seemed inevitable following his public criticism of the board for their lack activity in the summer, with only £13.3million spent on transfers, around half that came in from player sales.
Rodgers returned to Celtic in 2023 and added two Premiership titles as well as a Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup to the back-to-back trebles he won during his first stint.
Desmond’s damaning statement read: “I must also express my deep disappointment at the way the past several months have unfolded."
“His…public statements about transfers and club operations came entirely out of the blue. At no point prior to those remarks had he raised any such concerns with me, Michael, or any member of the Board or executive team. In reality, he was given final say over all football matters and was consistently backed in the recruitment process — including record investment in players he personally identified and approved.”
