Since joining West Ham United at the start of the season and rapidly becoming the focal point of the team's build-up play, the "big leap" for Mateus Fernandes is fast approaching.
The Portuguese midfielder's ball retention and vision have established him as one of the Premier League's most coveted modern box-to-box players.
Manchester United Begin Close Marking
The most concrete and persistent interest in Mateus Fernandes comes from one of English football's flagships: Manchester United.
The Red Devils have identified Fernandes as a "high-priority" target to complete their midfield transition and inject dynamism into the squad.
It has been learned that Manchester United scouts have personally monitored Fernandes from the stands, specifically during matches against Bournemouth, Liverpool, and Fulham. The scouting delegation selected these fixtures to test the player’s defensive discipline against possession-heavy sides and his playmaking leadership against well-matched opponents.
Reports from the United delegation emphasise that the player has passed not only technical but also physical resilience tests with flying colours.
Leaked information suggests the club will continue to report on the player weekly until the end of the season.
United have been closely tracking Mateus Fernandes’ progress since January, after both they and Manchester City made initial contact with West Ham during the recent transfer window.
European Giants Lying in Wait
Arsenal, who prioritise high possession percentages, view Fernandes as an ideal piece for their rotation, while Manchester City is closely tracking the player’s physical development.
Due to his Portuguese roots, it is reported that Atletico Madrid and Italy's AC Milan are updating their development reports on the player every month.
"A Modern-Day Regista"
Fernandes’ most distinguishing trait is his ability to find the correct passing lane even under heavy pressure. His 92% pass completion rate in Premier League fixtures is the primary statistic whetting the appetite of elite clubs.
He is exceptionally active both on and off the ball. The ground covered across the entire pitch proves he is a quintessential modern box-to-box midfielder.
Club Stance and Transfer Strategy
The West Ham board is fully aware of the gem they possess. The fact that the player is on a long-term contract gives the London club immense leverage at the negotiating table.
Should Manchester United or another giant become serious about a transfer, West Ham is expected to open negotiations in the €65M–€75 million range. This figure is nearly triple the cost of his arrival from Sporting CP.
Manchester United’s need for a creative and resilient presence in midfield aligns perfectly with Fernandes’ profile.
West Ham may aim to keep the player for one more year to push his valuation toward the €100 million mark.
Editor's Insight
West Ham are in a tricky situation with Fernandes, whose value is skyrocketing. To the Hammers board, whether to sell or wait and get a higher price in 12 months is a test of nerve. It reflects the quandary of cashing in or letting an accumulator ride; the certainty of the profit with United now adds some financial stability, but the prospect of seeing Fernandes at another club becoming a £100m asset feels too risky to chance.
