Will Keane is emerging as one of Reading’s top summer targets as the Royals look to land the experienced striker on a permanent deal following his departure from Preston North End, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Reading are understood to be keen on snapping up the former Manchester United forward on a free transfer after he impressed during a loan spell at the club last season.
Keane made an immediate impact after arriving at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, scoring twice in his first four appearances for Reading.
Although goals became harder to come by later in the campaign, Reading’s coaching staff were hugely impressed by his attitude, professionalism and influence in the dressing room.
The Royals believe the 33-year-old still has plenty left in the tank and see him as the perfect experienced frontman to lead their push for promotion next season after a frustrating campaign which saw them finish 12 points outside the League One play-off places.
RESPECTABLE
Keane spent the last three seasons at Preston but struggled for game time this term, making only two Championship appearances before heading to Berkshire on loan.
Despite limited opportunities last season, he still leaves Deepdale with a respectable return of 18 goals in 73 appearances.
The Stockport-born striker has built a strong career across the Football League after coming through United’s academy setup alongside twin brother Michael, who is expected to be offered a new one-year deal at Everton.
Although he made only two Premier League appearances at Old Trafford, Keane was once regarded as one of the brightest young forwards in English football and helped United win the FA Youth Cup.
MAJOR ROLE
His most successful spell came at Wigan Athletic, where he played a major role in their League One title-winning campaign in 2021 and 2022.
Keane has also represented Ipswich Town and Hull City, while also enjoying loan spells with Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday.
The striker has scored 83 goals in 320 senior appearances and is understood to be fully open to another crack at League One football if it means regular minutes and another promotion battle.
Keane had hoped to stay at Preston for another season, but boss Paul Heckingbottom is looking to freshen up his squad with younger additions this summer.
Editor's Insight
If we were to hedge our bets, Will Keane’s next permanent club will be Reading. The Royals clearly value his experience, leadership and professionalism, and a return feels like a natural fit for both parties as Reading look to mount a serious promotion push.
