Rangers Boss Danny Röhl Eyes Shea Charles Reunion Amid Southampton Chaos

Danny Rohl, the Rangers' head coach, wants to exploit the chaos surrounding Southampton by attempting to sign Shea Charles, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Northern Ireland international spent the 2024/25 season working with the German during his spell in charge of Sheffield Wednesday.
Having returned to his parent club as the Owls teetered on the edge of financial oblivion before being bought out by Arise Capital Partners earlier this month, Charles helped the Saints reach the Championship play-offs before the EFL expelled them after a member of staff was caught spying on their semi-final opponents Middlesbrough, seemingly at Tonda Eckert’s behest.
That punishment, which on Wednesday was upheld by an appeals tribunal, threatens to tear Southampton apart, with Eckert in danger of being dismissed and several senior performers, many of whom would have seen their contracts enhanced by promotion, now contemplating legal action against their own employers.
Charles, who has also attracted interest from Wednesday’s neighbours and arch-rivals Sheffield United, is among those whose earning potential has been curtailed by the actions of Eckert and others.
RESURRECT
That has reignited Rohl’s desire to resurrect his partnership with the one-time Manchester City youngster, with Charles understood to be open to the possibility of working with his former boss once again after making over 40 appearances for The Owls.
Following an underwhelming campaign in Scotland, Rohl is set to complete a major makeover of his squad during the summer transfer window.
With some sections of the Ibrox support base expressing reservations about his style, Rohl knows he is under pressure to start the new season strongly, and that is expected to see him target proven talent, which is known to him.
Charles, who scored six goals in all competitions for the Saints last term, ticks both of those boxes. Capped 32 times by his country, the 22-year-old began his career at the Etihad before moving to St Mary’s in 2023.
Editor's Insight
Röhl knows he needs instant results at Rangers, and bringing in a player he already trusts like Shea Charles feels like a smart, low-risk move if Southampton’s situation continues to unravel.
