Promoted Lincoln City are eyeing a move for former Coventry City midfield grafter Jamie Allen after his surprise release from the Premier League-bound Sky Blues, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Allen, 31, suddenly found himself on the market this month despite playing a key role in one of Coventry’s greatest modern success stories.
The experienced midfielder has been a familiar face at the club since arriving ahead of the 2019/20 campaign and was part of an incredible rise that saw the Sky Blues climb from League One all the way to the Premier League.
But with boss Frank Lampard now planning for life among the elite, Allen has become one of the casualties of a changing of the guard.
Lincoln are now believed to be weighing up a move as they hunt for proven Championship know-how ahead of next season's return to the second tier.
The Imps stormed to the League One title in breathtaking fashion, finishing 12 points clear of second-placed Cardiff after winning an incredible 31 of their 46 matches.
And after a season supporters will never forget, there is no intention at Sincil Bank of simply making up the numbers next term.
SIGNIFICANT
SportsBoom understands Lincoln now have significant financial muscle behind the scenes and are ready to back their recruitment team this summer as they look to cement themselves as a Championship club and continue the momentum from a remarkable campaign.
And Allen is emerging as a serious target. The midfielder brings exactly the sort of experience Lincoln are thought to want.
He knows the Championship inside out after spending the last six seasons competing in the division and has remained a reliable figure despite fierce competition for places.
Allen has featured in more than 20 league games in each of the last three seasons and clocked up 174 league appearances during his Coventry career.
Across all competitions, he reached the landmark of 200 appearances in seven years at the club.
More importantly, he knows what success looks like.
DOUBLE PROMOTION-WINNER
Allen won two league titles and two promotions during his Coventry spell and played a major role in helping the club rise through the divisions.
His energy, professionalism and versatility made him a trusted figure in the dressing room and among supporters.
Lampard himself paid glowing tribute to Allen after his departure, describing him as a "top player and incredible professional".
But with Coventry preparing for what could be a brutal first season back in the Premier League, Lampard is believed to be reshaping his squad with a mix of younger legs and a select group of senior players.
That decision could now hand ambitious Lincoln a major transfer boost.
Editor's Insight
This feels like a smart, low-risk piece of business for Lincoln if they can get it done. Allen brings proven Championship experience and promotion know-how, though at 31, it’s more about short-term stability than long-term upside.
