Chelsea's Levi Colwill on La Liga Radar as Barcelona and Real Madrid Circle

England centre-back Levi Colwill has entered the radar of Barcelona and Real Madrid in this summer’s transfer window.
According to sources close to SportsBoom Spain’s two giants are developing concrete and serious interest in the young English defender.
Only 22-year-old Colwill has firmly established himself as one of the most exciting defensive talents in the Premier League. The technical staff of both clubs began keeping close tabs on the player months ago.
Chelsea Dig In as Financial Pressure Mounts
Chelsea’s failure to qualify for the 2026/27 Champions League leaves the club facing severe financial pressure.
Absence from Europe’s most prestigious club competition does not simply mean a loss of revenue, it also turns the heads of the squad’s star players towards other doors. However, Chelsea’s board remain resolute on this matter. The hierarchy at Stamford Bridge places Colwill at the very heart of the club’s long-term rebuilding project and has absolutely no intention of letting him go. The club are playing the role of a stubborn seller.
Yet the picture is far from straightforward.
Playing on the Champions League stage that clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid put on the table is every footballer’s dream, and Colwill is no exception to that reality.
SportsBoom can exclusively reveal that the player is taking the interest from Spain seriously.
When you consider Barcelona’s appetite in recent years for young defenders who carry a homegrown mentality, Colwill’s profile fits their search to a tee. On the Real Madrid front, the player’s name has risen to the top of the list as part of the club’s plan to inject youth into their defensive line.
The Bastoni and Konaté Blueprint
This situation brings similar past episodes to mind.
Barcelona maintained an intense pursuit of Inter’s defender Alessandro Bastoni over a prolonged period.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, harboured a deep and months-long admiration for Liverpool’s French defender Ibrahima Konaté.
In both cases, the clubs held firm in their stubborn seller stance, yet the individual ambitions of the players remained a decisive factor throughout. The Colwill file is moving along the same lines.
€60-65 Million Bids on the Way, but Chelsea Want More
According to sources close to SportsBoom, La Liga’s two powerhouses are planning to table formal offers to Chelsea in the region of €60-65 million in the coming weeks.
That figure may appear reasonable for a Premier League centre back, but Chelsea’s own valuation of Colwill is considerably higher.
The board placed a price tag of at least £80 million on the player. This gap between the two sides’ valuations could prove a serious sticking point should negotiations get underway.
Although Chelsea’s financial pressures lend weight to the speculation, Colwill’s strategic importance to the squad dilutes the likelihood of a sale. The player does not simply function as part of the defensive organisation; he plays a critical role in Chelsea’s ball-playing identity. The manager knows full well that the doors will stay shut until a ready-made replacement for his centre back is found. That is the club’s most valuable bargaining chip.
Editor's Insight
Chelsea’s lack of European football weakens their position significantly, even if Colwill remains central to their plans. Barcelona and Real Madrid are both circling, and if either approaches £80m, Chelsea’s stance will be seriously tested. With Xabi Alonso now leading Chelsea, squad rebuilding will require major financial flexibility, and a big sale like Colwill could become part of that process.
