Premier League new boys Hull City are lining up a lucrative offer to hijack Spurs' swoop for their old boy Andy Robertson, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Scottish international made an emotional final appearance for Liverpool in the Reds’ 1-1 draw against Brentford at Anfield.
Robertson received a guard of honour as he was substituted on his 378th appearance for the Merseyside club, nine years after his debut.
It has been widely reported that there is a verbal agreement in place for the 32-year-old left back to join Spurs after the Londoners sealed their top-flight status with victory over Everton.
But SportsBoom understands Hull sees experienced Robertson as an ideal summer acquisition to help them consolidate their recently won Premier League status.
MAJOR RE-BUILD
The Tigers face a major rebuild in the off-season, funded by Turkish owner Acun Ilicali.
And Robertson, who made 44 appearances and scored three times for Liverpool in his last campaign, would be a cornerstone of that rebuild.
After playing his trade in his native Scotland with Queens Park and Dundee United, he moved south to join Hull in 2014.
In fact, he signed for the Humbersiders on the same day as Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, making his Premier League bow against QPR.
He stayed with Hull for three seasons before Liverpool snapped him up for a bargain £8 million.
DILEMMA
Now, about to become a free agent, Robertson faces a major dilemma: whether to move to the capital or stay in the North of England.
He celebrated Hull’s dramatic play-off final win over Middlesbrough last Saturday with a social media post.
‘So, happy for everyone at the club,’ he posted, prompting speculation among Tigers supporters.
Scottish double winners Celtic have previously been linked with Robertson, who, at this stage in his career, prefers to stay in the Premier League.
Editor's Insight
This feels like an ambitious but unlikely play from Hull City, more a statement of intent than a realistic hijack of Tottenham’s position. Now that Andy Robertson has left Liverpool, Spurs still look the more natural landing spot at this stage.
