Southampton want to extend Adam Armstrong’s contract amid interest from fellow Championship clubs, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

Our sources have been told there are a number of second tier suitors interested in the striker’s signature.

Armstrong, who was sent out on loan to West Bromwich Albion at the backend of last season, has returned to the fold at St Mary’s since their relegation back to the Championship.

A proven second-flight goalscorer, Armstrong has netted seven goals in 18 league outings this term, which an initial five-game goal drought.

Armstrong openly admitted he feared his Saints’ career could have been over in the summer.

But the former Newcastle youngster, who is contracted at the club until the summer of 2027, has played his way back into favour on the south coast.

It is expected Wrexham will reignite their interest in the player at the end of the season, whilst Leicester City are closely monitoring his situation as well.

West Brom’s interest has cooled after he struggled on loan at the club last term, but could be tempted to reignite their pursuit if Josh Maja leaves the club.

Southampton are also set to fight to retain Northern Ireland star Shea Charles as Rangers eye a big-money move for him.

Championship Star

Armstrong struggled during his time at Newcastle and failed to score in 17 league appearances at the club.

After a number of loan moves, the striker eventually found a new permanent home when he joined Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2018, after he helped fire them to Championship promotion at the backend of the previous campaign.

His first season in the division ended with just five goals, but he returned 16 and 28 respectively in the following two seasons to earn a Premier League return with the Saints.

Speaking about the player interim boss Tonda Eckert said: “We are very very happy to have Adam [Armstrong] as a character. As a player on the team, with the quality he brings, it's very nice to have him up there and he recognises moments like nobody else.”
