Charlton Athletic will not renew Onel Hernandez’s short-term deal at the club, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The Cuban midfielder penned a four-month deal as boss Nathan Jones was desperate to add Championship experience to his Addicks’ squad with a few key injuries among the group.

Jones has gone on record saying January will provide an opportunity to strengthen the squad.

And our sources have been told the former Norwich City player will not be rewarded a new contract as the club free up space for Jones to improve his options.

Hernandez has made five Championship appearances since joining the club, with the majority of those coming off the bench.

Hernandez was left out of the squad for Tuesday night's 3-0 defeat at Stoke City, the club's third defeat in a row, in the aftermath of the 5-1 drubbing at home to Southampton at the weekend.

Speaking about his January window plans, Jones said: “We know exactly what we are going to go for. It won't be a massive influx of players or exodus. We're really happy with the squad.”

“The only thing we'll do in the January transfer window is strengthen the squad. We won't go backwards.”

Hernandez was previously linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday before his short-term stint at Charlton, and with his contract set to expire in January, the South Yorkshire club could look to revisit a potential deal.

In & Out

Hernandez started his career at Germany and played at Arminia Bielefeld, Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg’s second sides and Eintracht Braunschweig before moving to England in 2018.

German manager Daniel Farke was the man to sign Hernandez at Norwich City.

Hernandez became the first Cuban to play in the Premier League in August 2019 and played 26 times during the 2019/20 season.

He was part of a second Canaries’ promotion the following campaign, but was left out of the club's top flight plans the following season and was sent out on loan at Middlesbrough and then Birmingham City.

He returned the Carrow Road following the club's relegation and spent three more seasons with them in the second tier and left in he summer before going to the Valley.
