Chesterfield want to snap up Ronan Darcy before more suitors come calling, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Spireites’ boss Paul Cook has been mightily impressed by the Wigan Athletic loanee since his arrival in Derbyshire.
The attacking midfielder has bagged three goals since his summer move to the League Two club.
It is understood Darcy’s performances have caught the eye of a number of fellow fourth-tier outfits and also sides in League One.
But our sources have been told that Darcy still has a future at the Latics after rediscovering his form under Cook’s stewardship.
The playmaker only joined Wigan in January and was shipped out on loan just seven months into his two-and-a-half-year deal at the club.
Wigan finally captured their man from Crawley Town with the player described by sporting director Gregor Rioch at the time as someone “in our sights for a while”.
That was under former boss Shaun Maloney with Darcy making 14 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring once.
Promotion Winner
Darcy is a two-time League Two promotion winner and Cook identified him as someone who could help the club in their quest for League One football and immediately snapped him up when it became apparent he was available.
Described as a “classic Cook player”, Darby is thriving under the experienced Spireites’ boss with his goal against Harrogate Town nominated for Goal of the Month in August.
Darcy, who has gained promotion with Bolton Wanderers, Queen’s Park and Crawley Town, said: “I’m really enjoying it here with Paul Cook’s style of play.”
And when he signed, he said: “With the way he wants to play and things like that, it suits me. I’m excited to be here.”
“The gaffer said to enjoy my football and the style he plays is something that I enjoy. Hopefully he can bring the best out of me.”
“The football there [Crawley] is very similar to what it will be here and we achieved promotion, which we’re hoping to achieve here too.”
