Newcastle United are trying to agree a new deal with Fabian Schär amid links of a move to Germany, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

St James’ Park bosses have been negotiating terms with Schar in recent months with the rock-solid defender, 33, into his final year with the Magpies.

The centre-back has played a huge part under Eddie Howe and the Magpies’ manager eager for the player to extend his eight-year stay at the club.

Our sources understand talks are ongoing over the logistics of the deal, which is expected to be his last at the Premier League given his age.

But the Switzerland star, who retired from international football with 83 caps following last year’s Euros, is attracting interest from abroad with a number of clubs understood to be monitoring his renewal talks.

Schär, who has fallen down the pecking order, will be a free agent in the summer and will be open to sign a pre-contract with a new club in January.

And that is putting pressure on Newcastle chiefs to get him to pen a new deal.

It is understood a number of clubs in Germany and Spain, where Schar has played previously with TSG Hoffenheim and Deportivo La Coruna respectively, have contacted the player’s agent to gauge Schar’s interest and there are at least three suitors willing to offer him a deal should he choose to leave Newcastle.

End of Era?

Schar joined the Magpies for £3million and has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the club.

He started the first five games of the season, but has spent the majority of the campaign on the bench since Germany international Malick Thiaw, a £35million summer signing, has got up to speed.

It is believed the experienced defender could be tempted if the right move became available.
