Harvey Elliott is determined to drag himself back from the football wilderness after Arne Slot's shock Liverpool exit handed him a surprise Anfield lifeline, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The midfielder has spent much of the last season out in the wilderness, struggling for opportunities and seeing his long-term future thrown into doubt following a disappointing loan spell at Aston Villa.

But with Dutchman Slot gone and Liverpool preparing to appoint a new manager, Elliott suddenly has a golden chance to resurrect his Reds career.

Slot had publicly backed Elliott only weeks before his departure, confirming the England Under-21 international would return to Merseyside for pre-season after a difficult campaign away from the club.

Now, however, the managerial upheaval has dramatically changed the picture.

Liverpool are moving quickly to appoint a successor, with former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola emerging as one of the leading candidates to take charge following Slot's departure.

For Elliott, that could not have come at a better time.

TALENT

The 23-year-old has endured a stop-start few seasons after once being regarded as one of the brightest young talents in English football.

Injuries, fierce competition for places and inconsistent opportunities have prevented him from fully establishing himself as a regular starter despite making more than 90 senior appearances for Liverpool.

His recent loan spell at Villa was supposed to reignite his progress, but instead became another frustrating chapter in a career that has stalled over the past 12 months.

Elliott joined the Midlands club last summer on a season-long loan, with an obligation to make the move permanent if he reached ten appearances.

However, Villa boss Unai Emery effectively signalled the end of his Villa career as early as December by making it clear the clause would not be triggered.

Elliott played just four games for the club and was largely surplus to requirements as he struggled to force his way into the first-team picture. Villa ultimately declined to activate the permanent deal, which left serious questions over his long-term future.

Yet despite his recent struggles, Elliott remains one of the most highly rated young midfielders in the country.

BRIGHT FUTURE

At just 23, he still has a bright future ahead of him and has long been earmarked for a successful career at the highest level.

The playmaker has spent seven seasons on Liverpool's books since arriving from Fulham and has enhanced his reputation on the international stage, helping England win the European Under-21 Championship twice.

Elliott's trophy haul already includes a Premier League title, two EFL Cups and a Europa League winner's medal earned during his spell at Aston Villa, although he was an unused substitute as Emery's side beat SC Freiburg 3-0 in the final in Istanbul. Those achievements have only strengthened the belief among many observers that Elliott possesses the talent to become a major player for both club and country.

The winger remains under contract at Anfield until June 2027 after signing a long-term extension in 2022, meaning Liverpool are under no pressure to cash in on the midfielder this summer. The Reds still regard the former Fulham youngster as a valuable asset and, with a new manager set to arrive following Slot's departure, Elliott believes he has a genuine opportunity to force his way back into first-team plans rather than seek a permanent move elsewhere.

SportsBoom understands that several Premier League clubs are understood to be monitoring the situation, aware that Elliott remains one of the most technically gifted young attacking midfielders in the country. But sources close to the player insist his priority remains Liverpool.

Other sources close to SportsBoom have suggested that Liverpool would still demand a price tag of around £35m despite his disastrous Villa loan spell, with German outfit RB Leipzig the most keen.

RELISH CHANCE

The former Fulham youngster grew up supporting the Reds and would relish the chance to impress a new manager during pre-season rather than seek an immediate transfer elsewhere.

With Liverpool expected to undergo significant changes this summer following a disappointing campaign that ended with Slot losing his job, opportunities could open up for hungry squad players looking to make their mark.

Elliott knows this may be his biggest chance yet. Another season on the fringes could force him to look elsewhere permanently. But if he can catch the eye of Liverpool's incoming boss, the playmaker may yet write a remarkable second chapter at Anfield.

After months of uncertainty, the door has unexpectedly swung back open, and Elliott is determined to grasp his second chance with both hands.

We expect Elliott to get a real pre-season chance under Liverpool’s new boss, with the betting markets shifting post-Slot showing renewed belief he stays and fights for his place rather than moving on this summer.
