Aston Villa have identified Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as a leading contender to replace Emiliano Martinez should the Argentina star leave Villa Park this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The new Europa League champions are aware that Martinez continues to attract interest from clubs across Europe and the Middle East and have already begun planning for life without their first-choice keeper if a suitable offer arrives.
And SportsBoom understands Verbruggen is high on the club's shortlist, with Villa's recruitment team convinced the Dutch international has all the attributes needed to become one of the Premier League's top goalkeepers for years to come.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise since joining Brighton from Belgian outfit Anderlecht in 2023.
Despite being just 20 when he arrived on the south coast, Verbruggen adapted seamlessly to English football and has since established himself as one of the most admired young goalkeepers in the Premier League.
His progress has been remarkable. Verbruggen has already made 105 appearances for Brighton in all competitions, including 95 outings in the Premier League, and has spent the last three seasons proving he belongs among the elite young keepers in the game.
HEAVWEIGHTS INTERESTED
His performances have caught the attention of several heavyweight clubs.
Manchester United and Liverpool are both understood to be monitoring his development closely, while a host of European giants continue to track his situation ahead of the transfer window.
Brighton remain in a strong position, however, with Verbruggen under contract until 2028 and under no immediate pressure to sell one of their most valuable assets.
Villa's interest comes as no surprise given the Dutchman's growing reputation.
Renowned for his shot-stopping, composure on the ball and ability to play out from the back, Verbruggen is viewed by many observers as a goalkeeper with virtually no weaknesses.
In a recent survey of football figures, more than 80 per cent of respondents placed him in the highest tier of young goalkeeping talent, underlining the esteem in which he is held across the game.
His rise has also been reflected on the international stage. Verbruggen has already collected 27 caps for the Netherlands and is expected to be his country's first-choice goalkeeper at this summer's World Cup.
The tournament could provide another platform for him to enhance his reputation further, with many believing he has the potential to become one of the world's leading goalkeepers over the next decade.
WORLD CUP STAR
Ironically, he could find himself succeeding another World Cup star at Villa Park.
Martinez has been named in Lionel Scaloni's Argentina squad for this summer's tournament after another outstanding campaign.
The 2022 Golden Glove winner will be hoping to help Argentina retain their world crown in the United States, Canada and Mexico after their dramatic penalty shootout victory over France four years ago.
Argentina begin their defence against Algeria on June 17 before facing Austria and Jordan in Group J.
Martinez signed a new long-term contract with Villa in 2024, which runs until 2029, but at 33 years of age, there is a growing acceptance that the World Cup winner is entering the latter stages of a glittering career.
The Argentine was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United last summer, and in January, although these rumours have slowed down due to the emergence of 'signing of the season' Senne Lammens.
By contrast, Verbruggen is only just getting started. At 23, the Dutchman is widely regarded as one of the finest young goalkeepers in Europe and a player standing at the beginning of what promises to be a long and distinguished career.
Should Martinez decide to move on after the World Cup, Aston Villa appear to have already identified the man they want to inherit the gloves.
Editor's Insight
If Villa lands Bart Verbruggen, it’s a clear signal they’re planning for a post-Martinez era without a drop-off in quality. He’s already one of Europe’s most promising keepers, and that kind of succession planning could subtly shift perceptions around Villa’s long-term stability in the market, even Premier League outright odds may edge in their favour if they get it right.
