Exclusive: Former Newcastle Defender Jamal Lewis on Radar of West Brom, Norwich, and Boro
Former Newcastle United left-back Jamal Lewis is being targeted by three Championship clubs for a free transfer after being released by his former club this summer. The 27-year-old defender has attracted interest from West Brom, Norwich City, and Middlesbrough, as well as several League One clubs. Lewis is looking to revive his career after a frustrating season, which was marred by injury, and hopes to return to top form as he seeks regular football opportunities.

A trio of Championship clubs are keen on signing former Newcastle United left-back Jamal Lewis on a free transfer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The experienced 27-year-old Northern Ireland defender was released by the Magpies this summer after three seasons at St James’ Park.
And now the 39-cap international full-back is being targeted by West Brom, former club Norwich City and Middlesbrough.
Sources close to the player have also indicated that a number of League One clubs have made enquiries about Lewis’ next move as he searches for regular football.
Last season was a frustrating one for the defender as injury frustratingly ended his Brazilian adventure.
After just three months with loan club Sao Paulo, he suffered a ban ankle injury which required surgery.
He ended up playing just six games for the club in the Brazilian Serie A and both the Tricolor Paulist and Magpies mutually agreed to terminate his loan contract and he returned to the UK for an operation.
A long lay-off also meant he didn’t play any games for Northern Ireland in 2025, with his last international appearance in a 0-0 draw away to Belarus in October 2024 in the Nations League.
OUT OF FAVOUR
And now Lewis is understandably hungry to get his career back on track after falling out of favour under Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.
The Baggies are keen on offering him the chance to kickstart his career, while the Canaries and Boro are also taking a punt on the player ahead of the new season.
Lewis enjoyed a loan season with Watford in the Championship before his left-field loan move to Brazil.
But despite being starved of Premier League opportunities, he has been a regular in Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland side.
Next season the defender hopes he can rediscover the form which earnt him a high-profile move to Newcastle from Norwich.
He was wanted by Liverpool at one stage in his career, with the Canaries’ having rejected a £10million bid from the Merseyside club.
In all he played 31 Premier League games for the Magpies before his loan move to the Hornets and has played 138 Championship matches during 180 career performances so far.
