Dundee United are exploring the possibility of bringing Allan Campbell back to Tannadice on a long-term basis, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal — but face competition from English Championship side Millwall.

The 27-year-old midfielder enjoyed a productive short-term stint with the Terrors last season, helping the club secure a fourth-place finish in the Scottish Premiership.

Campbell initially joined Dundee United in January after being released from his contract at Luton Town. The deal was a short-term agreement that ran until the end of the season and did not include an option for extension.

Sources indicate the Scottish club are now preparing to table a new offer in a bid to convince Campbell to commit to a longer stay in the top flight.

Millwall, meanwhile, are understood to have held initial discussions with the player’s representatives, although no formal offer has been made at this stage.

A former Scotland Under-21 international, Campbell made 13 appearances for Dundee United last season, following a loan spell at League One side Charlton Athletic during the first half of the campaign.

Additionally, Dundee boss Jim Goodwin is a big admirer of the player, someone he saw make his mark for Scotland Under-21s and then earn himself a full international cap in 2022.

"I thoroughly enjoyed watching him develop into one of Scotland’s brightest talents during his time at Motherwell,” said Goodwin, when he signed Campbell on a short-term deal in January until the end of last season.

TENACITY

"His tenacity in the middle of the park perfectly compliments his ability to handle the ball in tight areas and retain possession, all whilst posing a goalscoring threat from near and far."

“Allan is the example of professionalism. No matter where he has played, he has been available for almost every match since making the step into senior football nine years ago.”

Reflecting on his move back to Scotland, Campbell said at the time: “Pressure is a privilege and if you ask any footballer, they want to be involved in high-pressure scenarios. I feel they bring the best out of me.”

Campbell started his career with Motherwell and spent five seasons with the club in the Scottish Premiership before a move to play for Luton in the Championship.

PREMIER LEAGUE PROMOTION

The midfielder helped the Hatters win promotion to the Premier League in 2023 but then never played another game for the club, loaned to Millwall and Charlton Athletic before Dundee United came calling.

Dundee have already made eleven new signings so far in this summer’s transfer window with the arrival of Croatian winger Ivan Dolcek from Dunajska Streda, Barnsley striker Max Watters, Hungarian defender Kriszitan Kereztes, Swedish winger Amar Fatah, Finnish wing-back Dario Naamo and Ghanaian midfielder Isaac Pappoe, all on season-long loan deals.

Dutch defender Bert Esselink joined the club on a two-year deal towards the end of June, with the option of a further year, as well as Ukranian shot-stopper Yevheni Kucherenko, also on a two-year deal with a club-held option of an additional 12 months.

Midfielder Panutche Camara, centre-back Lurie Lovu and striker Zac Sapsford have also arrived on permanent deals as the club look forward to European football this season at Tannadice Park.
