Coventry City are doing everything in their power to try sign former Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Experienced Premier League hitman Bamford has been not played since leaving the Whites by mutual consent in August this year.
But the 32-year-old, who has played 102 Premier League games, is confident of getting his career back on track, even if it means playing in the Championship again.
The Sky Blues are flying high at the top of the second tier under Frank Lampard after a blistering start to the season.
They have won ten of their 15 league games so far and are five points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough.
And our sources understand the chance to work with former England international Lampard is one of the driving factors for driving to push a deal through.
Bamford has been training with the Sky Blues for just over a fortnight and is believed to have impressed Lampard, with the ex-Chelsea boss keen to sign the proven marksman on a free transfer.
Only wages and length of contract are the main factors in a deal being done, with Bamford hopeful he can one day earn himself a regular starting role at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Bamford could provide cover for Brandon Thomas-Asante, who was linked last week with a move to his former club Leeds United.
SWEET SUCCESS
Himself a former Chelsea player, Bamford enjoyed seven years at Elland Road before surprisingly being let go having been deemed surplus to requirements by Whites boss Daniel Farke.
The German coach didn’t see Bamford as part of his plans, despite having scored 17 goals to help the club win promotion back to the top-flight by winning the Championship title in the 2024-25 season.
Bamford achieved two famous promotions to the Premier League with Leeds, but having been in the wilderness for nearly three months, it’s little surprise the striker is ready to get back to first-team football.
Coventry and Lampard have given him the chance to impress, and sources have confirmed the centre-forward – capped once by England in 2021, has taken the chance with both hands.
“When asked about signing Bamford, Lampard recently said: “I know Patrick well and he hasn’t got a club. He’s training with us. I’m very happy, he’s a good lad, Patrick."
