Brentford will swoop for Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer if Yoane Wissa becomes the latest player to be lured away from the Gtech Stadium, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

After being pressured into selling Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, new Bees head coach Keith Andrews now faces the possibility of losing Wissa too with Newcastle adding his name to their list of potential targets.

Although he would not be a like for like replacement, Hamer’s ability and relatively modest price tag would make him an attractive proposition for Thomas Frank’s replacement.

Crucially, Andrews also knows the 28-year-old well following his brief spell as a member of The Blades’ backroom staff a year ago.

Unlike the Irishman, Hamer remains at Bramall Lane having moved there from Coventry City in the summer of 2023.

But with United failing to regain their Premier League status at the first attempt, they were beaten in the Championship play-off final by Sunderland, the Brazil-born attacker’s future there continues to be shrouded in doubt.

Having been brought up in Holland and choosing to represent the Netherlands at both under-18 and under-20 level, PSV Eindhoven have already made their intentions to lure Hamer back across the North Sea crystal clear.

TEMPTATION

However, if Brentford are forced to re-enter the transfer market, the possibility of establishing himself in the English top-flight would prove difficult for Hamer to resist.

Having already seen Vini Souza poached by Wolfsburg following that devastating loss at Wembley, The Blades are determined not to lose another of their big name stars as new boss Ruben Selles aims to go one better than his predecessor Chris Wilder.

Still, United’s negotiating position has been weakened by the fact Hamer is about to enter the penultimate year of his contract and has yet to show any inclination to extend.

Previously of Feyenoord, senior figures at The Blades are confident he will not actively push to leave following Selles’ appointment and could be persuaded to open discussions about an improved deal if they make a strong start to the new campaign.

But they also acknowledge that Hamer retains ambitions of becoming a regular top-flight performer and knows he would feature regularly under Andrews.
