West Ham is navigating their way through a rough patch, juggling the pressure of being in the relegation dogfight while trying to stay positive in this rebuilding phase under Nuno Espirito Santo. The Hammers have shown flashes of attacking potential but still have work to do in finding their rhythm and strength as a collective, which could see them secure more points and fight their way out of the danger zone.

The last five games have been inconsistent, but at the same time, there has been massive improvement from where they came from. The victory against Burnley allowed them to travel to the Vitality Stadium to face Bournemouth, and with momentum on their side, they managed to come away with a point in an intensely contested matchup. 

Their hot streak was ended by Liverpool, which is nothing to be ashamed of, considering the difficulties they have faced, but showed resilience going to Old Trafford and stealing a point after Soungoutou Magassa scored a late equalizer. The trip to Brighton last time out was another display of resilience and character, proving they are on the right track. With the in-form Aston Villa next up, the Hammers will need to defend with discipline but remain sharp on the break if they aim to cause an upset on the day.  

Key Players To Watch

  • Jarrod Bowen: Bowen is the main man for West Ham. If something were to happen to him, the Hammers would be in a far worse place than they are now. He is a blend of speed and skill, with the ability to put teammates into positions to score goals, while having the knack of scoring himself, making him an absolute gem for Nuno at the moment. 
  • Callum Wilson: Wilson is a seasoned professional who brings a wealth of experience to the Hammers front line. He has intelligent movement off the ball, where he identifies space to exploit and to bring other players into the game. While he lacks the speed he once had, he makes up for it by making the right decisions and with his finishing ability.
  • El Hadji Diouf: Diouf is becoming a fan favourite at the London Stadium. Despite his young age and limited Premier League experience, he is not afraid of a challenge and always gives his best efforts. He’s a dynamic full-back who has plenty of speed to run the flank, allowing him to chase opponents to win back possession, and make bursting runs in attack to provide scoring opportunities.

Aston Villa arrive with confidence and momentum on their side, having shown a habit this season for high-pressure football and sustained attacking spells, putting Unai Emery and his undeniable coaching qualities on full display. Now firmly in the title chase, Emery will not allow complacency to settle in and will expect his men to maintain their high standards going into every challenge.

Villa has the best streak in the league across the last five games, collecting 15 out of 15 points available in five consecutive victories. Leeds at Elland Road was the start of this rampage, having scored two second-half goals to steal the victory. Young Boys was next on the hit list and suffered defeat at Villa Park, followed by a hard-fought victory over Wolves.

A trip to the Amex to face Brighton delivered a seven-goal thriller, which saw Villa again put their newfound confidence on display, coming back from two goals down to take the win. League leaders Arsenal were the ultimate test for Emery and his men last time out, and yet again passed with flying colours as Emiliano Buendia scored with the final touch of the game to snatch the victory.

West Ham next will be a very different challenge given the history of this fixture, but knowing the significant value victory holds for their title aspirations and recent unbeaten streak, Emery will demand nothing less than maximum points from his men.

  • Morgan Rodgers: Rodgers is becoming one of the most important players for Emery. He has been showing his quality on the ball, whether it be as an attacking midfielder or down the flanks, the England international can make something out of nothing. His skill and vision make him a constant threat in the final third, allowing him to create and get on the end of scoring opportunities. 
  • Ollie Watkins: Watkins has had a slow start this season in terms of goals, but remains a deadly striker when given space and time. He makes clever runs off the ball to get behind defensive lines into dangerous areas where he can use his speed and skill to eliminate defenders. He’s adept at scoring from various positions and is one to keep an eye on in this fixture. 
  • Matty Cash: While Cash is known for his defensive duties, he is equally important in attack, which has elevated his game to the next level. He brings energy to the right flank, where he can link up play by playing out from the back, using his speed and agility to get into good positions to deliver quality crosses or pick out a teammate in on goal.

Ross Barkley (knee) is expected to spend a lengthy period out due to a knee injury he suffered against Wolves. Tyrone Mings (hamstring) is working hard to return next month, but will not be rushed and brought back into action slowly after facing a tough time with his hamstring injury
