Chelsea vs Newcastle United Preview: Odds, Tips & Prediction
Date: Saturday, March 14 Venue: Stamford Bridge Kick-off: 5:30pm GMT Chelsea will look to maintain their push for a Champions League berth against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, March 14. The Blues have been a curious case, but as the race for Europe intensifies, so does betting activity increase. Many top football sportsbooks post a variety of lines, and we use these to form our expert tips. Going into this game, Chelsea have blown hot and cold. They were undone by set-pieces against Arsenal, and Pedro Neto was dismissed for a cynical challenge on Gabriel Martinelli. However, the Blues bounced back with a 4-1 evisceration of an out-of-sorts Aston Villa. Newcastle, on the other hand, were superb against Manchester United, handing Michael Carrick the first defeat of his second spell in charge of the Red Devils, and Tyneside was bouncing that evening.

Chelsea Current Form – WDDLW
Although there have been plenty of things to marvel at about Chelsea’s season, there have also been some setbacks.
Their biggest issue has been their lack of discipline. They’ve picked up seven red cards, three more than Tottenham, who are second on the list. Neto, for example, was rash when he wiped out Martinelli during the Blues’ 2-1 defeat against Arsenal.
However, they responded with a sumptuous performance against Aston Villa. Chelsea amassed nearly double the attempts Villa had on goal at Villa Park, and their passing accuracy was 91.2%, which was superb.
Quick transitions are the way to go, but Liam Rosenior’s men can’t switch off from set pieces.
Key Players to Watch
- Joao Pedro
The quicksilver Brazilian has been sublime, contributing 14 goals and five assists this term. He’s been in fabulous form, and having scored at St James’ Park earlier in the season, Newcastle will be on red alert. - Cole Palmer
A talismanic player, Cole Palmer has put up some impressive numbers over the past few weeks. He’s scored five times in his past five league appearances, so he’s in a purple patch. - Reece James
Reece James is usually at the heart of all good Chelsea moves. He’s often right on the money with his free-kicks, so he could be a thorn in the Newcastle side.
Chelsea Team News
Estevao and Jamie Gittens (both hamstring) are sidelined, and the only other player doubtful is Neto, who could see his suspension for his red card against Arsenal extended.
Newcastle United Current Form – LWLLW
Newcastle United had a bit of a downturn towards the end of February, but their stirring 2-1 at home to Manchester United suggests they could be in the ascendancy again.
Against the Red Devils, Newcastle had an xG (expected goals) rate of 2.22, and they also hit the woodwork. Yes, Anthony Gordon missed a sitter, but he’s invariably a threat.
Eddie Howe’s men may not have won at Stamford Bridge in over 10 years, but getting Gordon on the ball as much as possible could hold the key to success.
Key Players to Watch
- Anthony Gordon
Acting as the club’s chief penalty taker, Gordon poses a danger, and he’s contributed six goal involvements this term (four goals and two assists). The Blues will need to keep a tight leash on him. - Sandro Tonali
A midfield schemer, Sandro Tonali orchestrates attacks and loves to have a pop from distance. Three goals in his past six games in all competitions is worth drawing attention to. - Harvey Barnes
Quick on and off the ball, Harvey Barnes has teamed up well with Gordon. Although he’s been short on goals lately, he boasts excellent vision, and Chelsea must be
Newcastle United Team News
Newcastle will be bereft of Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley, but Howe shouldn’t have any selection headaches for the trip to Chelsea.
Predicted Line-Ups
Chelsea (4-3-3)
Jorgensen; Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Hato, James, Caicedo, Fernandez, Palmer, Pedro; Garnacho
Newcastle United (4-3-3)
Ramsdale; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall, Ramsey, Tonali, Joelinton, Elanga, Gordon; Barnes
Suggested Bets
Footing betting sites with Premier League lines will have a variety of markets for fans to engage with. Here are our expert tips and predictions before Chelsea vs Newcastle United.
Over 2.5 Goals: The last two clashes at Stamford Bridge have seen this line hit, so it’s worth leaning into. (4/9 with Betfred)
Chelsea Double Chance: Chelsea have a formidable record against Newcastle at home, not losing against the Magpies in the Premier League since 2012, so this is worth following up on. (1/4 with William Hill)
Both Teams to Score (Yes): The BTTS market is popular, and in the case of Chelsea and Newcastle, this has been fulfilled in each of the last three league encounters in London, so you should consider it. (1/2 with Midnite)
Value Bets
Don’t forget to capitalise on lines offered by Premier League bookies that have longer odds attached. For bettors, this can yield bigger returns if successful.
Chelsea Over 2.5 goals: Chelsea have been free-flowing against Newcastle at home, scoring two or more in three of the past five league clashes, so this has value. (7/4 with QuinnBet)
Anytime scorer – Joao Pedro: With five goals in his past four league outings, Joao Pedro has been sublime, and he could net at anytime. (29/20 with Leovegas)
Anytime assist – Enzo Fernandez: Fernandez has popped up with three assists this term, and he’s a crafty player, so there is something in this line. (16/5 with BetMGM)
Prediction: Chelsea to Win
Despite the odd setback this season, Chelsea have been good value for money under Rosenior, and a top-four finish is certainly attainable given Aston Villa’s travails over the past few weeks.
Although Newcastle are exciting to watch, their away form has been a problem, and it has held them back. Given their pretty dismal record at Stamford Bridge, where they haven’t tasted victory since 2012, we’re going for a home win here.
