Brighton vs Burnley Preview: Odds, Tips & Prediction
Date: Saturday, January 3 Venue: AmEx Stadium Kick-off: 3pm Brighton will be eager to add to Burnley’s woes when they clash at the AmEx Stadium on Saturday, January 3. Although Brighton are under-performing, they are still doing markedly better than Burnley, who are trying to scramble to safety. After a run of seven defeats on the spin, Burnley picked up back-to-back draws against Bournemouth and Everton, but they need to put some more points on the board to stave off relegation. Interestingly, the last two clashes between Brighton and Burnley ended in the same scoreline (1-1), and the Seagulls would love to return to winning ways, given their last victory came away to Nottingham Forest back in November. Head-to-Head Record
Premier League head-to-head records offer interesting glimpses leading up to games. This is what has happened in recent meetings between Brighton and Burnley:
Last Five Meetings (Premier League)
- 13/04/24: Burnley 1-1 Brighton
- 09/12/23: Brighton 1-1 Burnley
- 19/02/22: Brighton 0-3 Burnley
- 14/08/21: Burnley 1-2 Brighton
- 06/02/21: Burnley 1-1 Brighton
Brighton Current Form – LDLDL
Brighton, on the face of it, are a curious case. Last season, they finished eighth, and each campaign they tend to lose their top players. Normally, they have managed to rebuild on what seems a shoestring budget.
Anyway, they have regressed this season, and currently, they are in the bottom half of the table. Wins have been hard to come by lately, although they gave Arsenal a scare at the Emirates before leaving empty-handed.
Seagulls boss Fabian Hurzeler, however, would like to look on the positive side, and his team are just five points off the top six at the moment, so it’s not all doom and gloom.
Key Players to Watch
- Yankuba Minteh
Skilful and quick, there have been rumours linking Yankuba Minteh with a January move to Liverpool. With four league assists to his name this term, he’s a vital cog in the Brighton machine. - Danny Welbeck
This season, Danny Welbeck has been rolling back the years. Seven goals is an impressive return, and while he hasn’t netted since a 2-1 win over Brentford in November, he will be eager to add to his tally against Burnley. - Lewis Dunk
The club’s long-serving captain, Lewis Dunk likes to thread intricate passes and break the lines, and apart from a 92% pass completion rate, he is strong and commanding in the air.
Brighton News
Brighton are trying to re-integrate players back into the fold, including Kaoru Mitoma, who missed the Arsenal game through illness. Solly March, meanwhile, has been training with the Under-21s, and he’s getting used to the intensity of games before being thrown back into Hurzeler’s starting XI.
Burnley Current Form – LLLDD
Burnley may be comfortably clear of Wolves, but climbing out of the relegation zone presents its own challenges.
Although they showed more defensive solidity in their last league game against Everton, claiming a clean sheet in a goalless draw, Burnley have already leaked 34 goals.
Perhaps more worryingly, the Clarets spurned plenty of clear openings against the Toffees, and they need to get their act together if they are going to stay up.
Key Players to Watch
- Martin Dubravka
An experienced Premier League shot-stopper, the Slovakian is often unflappable, and he pulled off some amazing saves to keep Everton at bay. He will need to replicate that performance against Brighton if Burnley are going to pick up any points. - Lesley Ugochukwu
The Frenchman seems to have made himself feel at home at Burnley, and he’s a fab favourite. His explosive style, combined with his eye for goal, means he could cause Brighton problems. - Kyle Walker
A born winner, Kyle Walker may be nearing the end of his Premier League career, but he still relishes getting to the byline and whipping in crosses, and he’s still got some pace, so he can track back effectively.
Burnley News
Burnley have a fairly extensive injury list, but Joe Cullen damaged his knee, and he could be out for some time, which would represent a major blow.
Predicted Line-Ups
Brighton (3-4-2-1)
Verbruggen; Coppola, van Hecke, Dunk, Kadioglu, Minteh, Hinshelwood, De Cuyper, Gomez; Rutter; Welbeck
Burnley (3-4-3)
Dubravka; Laurent, Ekdal, Humphreys, Walker, Ugochukwu, Cullen, Lucas Pires, Edwards, Broja; Bruun Larsen
Suggested Bets
Premier League sportsbooks are flushed with pre-match odds, and we’ve divulged some football betting tips to capitalise on.
Brighton Double Chance: Brighton have only lost one of their past six meetings with Burnley, so the Double Chance for the Seagulls to win or draw makes sense. (1/10 with BetUK)
Both Teams to Score - Yes: Only once in the past five contests has this line not been fulfilled, so this is worth leaning into. (3/4 with Bet442)
First Team to Score – Brighton: Although Burnley have opened the scoring in the past two clashes, Brighton, roared on by a home crowd, could take the lead. (4/9 with QuinnBet)
Value Bets
Anytime Scorer – Danny Welbeck: A fox in the box, Welbeck can sniff out a chance, and he has been firing this term. He could well hit the target. (23/20 with Betfred)
Brighton Over 6.5 Shots on Target: Across the past two games against Burnley, Brighton have comfortably exceeded this target, so it’s not fanciful to suggest they will do it again. (6/4 with BetMGM)
Total Corners Over 12.5: When these sides met in February 2021, Brighton shaded the corner count, but 15 were distributed. The Over 12.5 line could be met.
Prediction: Draw
Brighton aren’t exactly going places quickly, while Burnley are stuck in a rut. This might not be the most glamorous fixture of the weekend, but it is an important one for both sides. Well, as far as Burnley is concerned, there is a bit more riding on it in terms of fighting off relegation. Anyway, 1-1 has been the scoreline across the past two meetings, and while it might not happen for a third time in a row, a draw could be on the cards.
