Having extended his contract with Leeds United back in 2022 until June 30, 2027, Pascal Struijk has once again entered the "strategic backup" shortlists of Premier League giants during his peak years.
The 26-year-old defender, known for his consistent performances and leadership qualities in the Premier League, offers an invaluable option for top-flight sides looking to bolster their squad depth.
Leeds United’s Strategy: Captain or Cash Flow?
The Leeds United board views Struijk as more than just a defender; he is a vital part of the club’s cultural and tactical identity.
Leeds' hierarchy are not eager to sell. However, the financial outlays required for their Premier League journey and squad overhaul plans could break their resistance if an astronomical bid arrives.
Struijk does not carry an "unsellable" tag, but the club is operating as a "resolute seller."
Valuation Expectations
Leeds are expected to open negotiations at the £30 million mark. The scarcity of left-footed, ball-playing centre backs in the market supports the club's determination not to drop below this figure.
Tottenham Hotspur view Struijk as a serious option. For Spurs, Struijk represents a "ready and reliable" alternative should they cash in on their starting duo of Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero.
Additionally, Unai Emery’s obsession with ball-playing centre backs has put Struijk on the radar at Villa Park. The Villa board could prepare a package worth around £20 million to manage the heavy match congestion of European football.
Newcastle are also seeking an experienced name physically acclimated to the Premier League tempo, Newcastle views Struijk as the strongest candidate on their "Plan B" list. With rumours that dutch starter Sven Botman could depart in the summer, he would be a readymade replacement.
Financial Context
While this keeps Leeds’ hand strong this summer, they may view this window as a "selling opportunity" to avoid the risk of losing him for a lower fee next year.
Leaked information suggests Struijk wants to bring his earnings in line with Premier League standards (the £4-5 million per year bracket) and will prioritise a project where he is guaranteed regular minutes.
Leeds intends to reinvest the proceeds from a potential Struijk sale into two younger, high-potential defenders to spread their risk.
