Manchester United’s James Garner Homecoming Looks Unlikely Despite Interest

Having developed through the Manchester United Academy only to be offloaded to Everton in 2022 for a mere £9 million, James Garner has evolved into one of the most complete midfielders in the Premier League. 

While the "why did we sell?" debate ages at Old Trafford, the new contract extension Everton secured in January, tying the player down until 2030, has acted as a heavy sledgehammer to United’s dreams of a homecoming.

United’s "Buy-Back" Obsession

Garner is viewed as one of the primary options for the midfield rotation. However, the situation has shifted from a mere transfer into a war of "reputation and strategy." 

Manchester United scouts have reported Garner not just as a former player, but as one of the league’s top performers in possession won and interceptions. 

In a system focused on high-press and dynamism, Garner sat at the top of the list as a "cost-effective and ready-made" solution. The scouting department emphasized his tactical discipline as a key factor that the current United squad lacks in transition moments.

During the January window, United tested the waters through informal channels, but Garner’s decision to sign a new deal, stating: "I’ve found myself here; I will complete my unfinished business with Everton." This commitment has sent a clear message to the Old Trafford board that nostalgia alone will not secure a signature.

It’s not just United; for clubs looking to add a high-quality homegrown "Number 8" to their midfield, Garner is now a prime "leadership" candidate. His ability to control the tempo under pressure has caught the attention of several Champions League-bound sides.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has emerged as their top target in central midfield, with reports suggesting a fee in the region of £60 million, mirroring the investment that would have been required for a Garner return. The Red Devils have also been linked with Garner’s Everton teammate Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, though sources suggest he is better suited to a more advanced, attacking role rather than the deep-lying position United are looking to strengthen.

"The Maestro Old Trafford Missed"

The technical files submitted to United’s executive board highlight the following headers. 

The 25-year-old has excelled at Everton not only with his football but with his on-pitch character. Described by David Moyes as the "future captain," Garner was seen as the only candidate capable of fixing the lack of "leadership and discipline" in United’s engine room. His vocal organisation of the defensive line during set-pieces is cited as an elite trait.

His ability to operate as both at right-wing and a central midfielder is a "gold-standard" attribute for clubs like United that frequently battle injury crises. This versatility allows managers to shift tactical formations mid-match without requiring a substitution.

This season, his growth in passing accuracy and set-piece delivery has propelled him toward the league’s elite tier. His delivery from wide areas has become one of Everton’s most lethal attacking weapons.

No "Buy-Back Clause"

The most painful detail for Manchester United is the fact that they failed to include a buy-back clause when selling Garner. 

When Everton sits down to negotiate with United now, they are in a position to demand at least 6-7 times the original £9m fee. Following the new contract, Everton is expected to open the bidding at the £50M–£55 million mark as a mandatory baseline.

Garner has become one of Everton’s top earners with his new deal, making any "bargain homecoming" operation completely impossible for United. He is no longer the academy boy but a marquee franchise player.
