Atlético Madrid are desperately trying to fund a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The Spanish outfit were priced out of a move for the World Cup winner last summer.

But sources in Spain have told SportsBoom that boss Diego Simeone has told the board he wants his Argentine compatriot at the heart of his defence.

And it is understood they are working on the logistics of making the move come to fruition this time around.

Romero is hot property and according to sources he could leave the north London club regardless of whether or not they get relegated at the end of the season.

And it has emerged that the Spurs’ skipper got a clause inserted into the contract extension he signed earlier this season, which runs until 2029, to include a €60million release clause for La Liga clubs Real Madrid, Atlético and Barcelona.

There is plenty of interest in Romero, who has proven himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world in recent years despite Spurs’ struggles.

It is understood Liverpool have earmarked him as a potential target as they continue their search for a long-term replacement for Virgil van Djik.

Manchester United have also been linked with the 27-year-old in recent days.

But, it is understood Spurs are not willing to sell the defender to a Premier League rival if they stay up.

Roma are among a number of Italian sides who would like to take the star back to Serie A, where he previously played for Genoa, Atalanta and Juventus.

However, it is unlikely sides in Italy would be able to fund a move for the player.

Spurs' Star Likely To Move On

Speaking earlier this season ahead of coming up agains Romero in the Champions League, Simeone said: “I speak from a point of view as an Argentina fan. I admire his personality, his character, his defensive work and his football ability on the ball.”

“As a fan of Argentina, I have seen him play more games for the national team than I have for Spurs, but I'm a big fan of him, for sure.”
