Sheffield United and Wrexham want to sign unsettled Southampton striker Adam Armstrong, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

The experienced Saints hitman spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom having struggled to cement a regular starting spot in the first team.

But the Baggies have not pursued a permanent move for the 28-year-old striker, with the Blades and Red Dragons having now entered the race to win his signature.

Armstrong scored for the Saints in a 2-2 pre-season draw with Brighton and Hove Albion, but our sources have learnt the club are prepared to sell if the price is right.

However, the added complication to any potential deal is that the Blades and the Saints are both gunning to win promotion back to the Premier League this season.

Armstrong has two years remaining on his current having signed a three-year extension in July 2024.

But in order for the Saints to sell, they are looking for in the region of £10million having signed Armstrong for £5million more back in August 2021.

The Blades have made five signings in the transfer window, but as yet have not signed a striker, while Championship newcomers have only recruited one striker so far with Ryan Hardie having signed from Plymouth Argyle.

CHAMPIONSHIP CHALLENGE

Last season he played 20 games in the Premier League before finding himself surplus to requirements and a drop down to play in the Championship.

He joined the Baggies in the January transfer window and returned three goals in 16 league appearances.

Having enjoyed two seasons in the Premier League between 2021-24, Armstrong saw part of the Saints’ side which was relegated from the top-flight.

They won promotion the following season only to be relegated again 12 months later.

Armstrong started his career with Newcastle before loan moves with Coventry City, Barnsley, Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers.

After joining Rovers on loan he returned 64 goals in 160 games and has scored 32 goals in 142 games for the Saints.
