Sean Dyche has emerged as a surprise contender in the race to become Ipswich Town's new manager, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The former Burnley and Everton boss is understood to have put his hat in the ring for the vacancy at Portman Road following Kieran McKenna's departure earlier this month.
McKenna stunned supporters when he stepped down from his role to spend more time with his family, ending a hugely successful spell in charge of the Tractor Boys.
Since then, Ipswich have been weighing up their options as they search for the man to lead the club into a new era.
Former Wolves boss Gary O'Neil has been widely regarded as the clear favourite for the position.
But SportsBoom understands Dyche's interest in the job has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons and added a major new twist to the recruitment process.
The 55-year-old is one of the most experienced managers currently out of work and is keen to make a swift return to the dugout. He has also been linked with the vacant Burnley role.
REPUTATION
Dyche has built a reputation as one of English football's most respected managers after successful spells with Watford, Burnley and Everton.
His greatest achievements came at Burnley, where he guided the Clarets to promotion from the Championship on two occasions and established them as a force in the Premier League.
Under Dyche, Burnley spent seven seasons in the top flight and even secured a memorable place in European competition.
His ability to build organised, hard-working teams earned him huge admiration throughout the game.
Dyche then took over at Everton in January 2023 and helped steer the Merseyside club through a turbulent period both on and off the pitch.
CHALLENGES
Despite financial challenges and points deductions, he succeeded in keeping the Toffees in the Premier League before eventually leaving the club.
With vast top-flight experience and a proven track record of winning promotion, Dyche is seen by many as a safe pair of hands.
Ipswich, however, are yet to make a final decision on who will replace McKenna.
Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to be heavily linked with the role, while highly-rated Kjetil Knutsen remains under consideration after his impressive work in Norway.
O'Neil is still believed to be a leading contender, but Dyche's late emergence has added fresh intrigue to the battle for one of the most sought-after managerial jobs in English football.
Editor's Insight
Ipswich face a big call, with both Sean Dyche and Gary O’Neil recently sacked from their Premier League roles at Forest and Wolves, respectively. Dyche offers stability and structure, O’Neil a more progressive edge, but neither comes without doubts after their latest setbacks.
