West Ham are lining up a move to bring Chelsea defender Axel Disasi back to the club on a permanent deal, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The Hammers are keen to bolster their defence this summer, and the experienced Frenchman has emerged as a leading target after his loan spell in East London last season.
Disasi, 28, spent the second half of the campaign with West Ham and made 14 Premier League appearances as the club suffered the agony of relegation.
But despite the disappointing end to the season, the former France international is understood to have enjoyed his time with the Hammers and would welcome the chance to return.
West Ham chiefs are exploring several defensive options as they look to launch an immediate bid for promotion back to the top flight.
And Disasi's experience, leadership and knowledge of English football make him an attractive option.
The defender remains under contract at Chelsea but faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge, with regular first-team football far from guaranteed.
MAJOR ROLE
That has alerted West Ham, who believe he could play a major role in helping them bounce straight back to the Premier League.
Sources close to the player say Disasi is open to discussions over a permanent move.
After a difficult spell in recent seasons, he is keen to get his career back on track and is prioritising a club where he can play week in, week out.
The French defender still believes he has plenty left in the tank and is determined to prove he can perform at the highest level.
A return to the London Stadium could offer exactly the fresh start he is looking for.
Disasi arrived in English football with a big reputation following his move from Monaco and has also featured regularly for France on the international stage.
While his time at Chelsea has not gone entirely to plan, his pedigree remains unquestioned, and there is no shortage of admirers of his qualities.
PROFESSIONALISM
West Ham were impressed by his professionalism and attitude during his loan stint, even as the club battled unsuccessfully to avoid the drop.
The Hammers are expected to be active in the transfer market as they reshape their squad for life in the Championship.
Managerial uncertainty has done little to halt recruitment planning behind the scenes, with club officials already identifying players capable of helping deliver an instant return to the Premier League.
Disasi is firmly on that shortlist.
Any deal would depend on Chelsea's demands and the player's wage package, but early indications suggest there is a willingness from all parties to explore a move.
Editor's Insight
West Ham looks the most natural landing spot after his loan spell, especially with Disasi open to a return. Chelsea’s price will be the swing factor, though, and it could open the door for late interest elsewhere. Lean West Ham, but not a certainty, more a cautious transfer market watch than a strong bet.
