Jean-Philippe Mateta is in line for a lucrative new contract as Crystal Palace step up efforts to keep hold of one of their most influential players, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.

SportsBoom understands Palace are keen to reward the French striker after a season that saw him overcome adversity to become the hero of the club's historic European triumph.

Mateta endured a turbulent campaign that was disrupted by a serious knee injury, an issue that not only sidelined him for a lengthy spell but also scuppered his hopes of securing a move to AC Milan during the January transfer window.

He was even booed by sections of the Palace support during his first appearance after returning from injury.

But the 28-year-old responded spectacularly. He scored the only goal of the game as the Eagles edged past Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig, sealing a famous victory in the UEFA Conference League final.

His decisive strike ensured the South London side wrote a new chapter in their history, claiming their first European title and adding another major honour to a remarkable period for the club following their FA Cup success. The victory also secured Palace a place in next season's Europa League.

GROWING INTEREST

Mateta's current contract runs until June 2027, but Palace are determined to extend those terms and fend off growing interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan are both understood to be monitoring his situation closely, while Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Manchester United have also expressed an interest in the prolific frontman.

Despite that attention, Palace remain optimistic that an improved package will convince Mateta to commit his long-term future to Selhurst Park and become the focal point of the club's ambitious plans.

The striker's future had appeared uncertain following the summer departure of former manager Oliver Glasner, with the pair having enjoyed an excellent working relationship.

However, SportsBoom understands Mateta is enthusiastic about working under new boss, Pierre Sage.

REPUTATION

The French coach enhanced his reputation by guiding Lens to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and French Cup glory last season, and Mateta is believed to be a strong admirer of his methods.

Mateta has become one of the club's modern success stories since arriving on an initial 18-month loan from German side Mainz 05 in January 2021. His performances convinced Palace to make the move permanent in January 2022, a decision that has paid handsome dividends.

Since arriving in South London, Mateta has made 202 appearances for Palace, scoring 62 goals in all competitions. He has also featured 162 times in the Premier League, establishing himself as one of the division's most reliable forwards.

Now, after overcoming injury setbacks and delivering the goal that secured European glory, Palace are desperate to ensure their talisman remains at Selhurst Park for the next chapter of the club's remarkable rise.

Palace are sensible to act early on Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has become too important to risk losing amid growing interest. Securing him would stabilise their project and likely tighten their odds for another strong European push, while any delay only invites speculation.
