Former Wigan and Preston boss Ryan Lowe has powered into pole position to become the new manager of Northampton Town after a stunning impression in talks with club chiefs, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
The 45-year-old, who was sacked by the Latics in February affer a seven-game winless stretch and run of worrying form, is now the clear front runner to take over at Sixfields.
SportsBoom understands Lowe has leapt ahead of rival candidates and is now the man the Cobblers want, with an appointment expected within the next couple of weeks.
Northampton have been on the hunt for a new manager since axing Kevin Nolan on March 9 after a damaging run of results.
The Cobblers have taken their time to weigh up options, speaking to a number of contenders, but Lowe has emerged as the outstanding pick.
STEADY HAND
Behind the scenes, technical director Colin Calderwood has taken charge of first team matters for the closing stretch of the season.
Calderwood has steadied things, but the club are desperate to install a permanent boss who can spark a fresh push next term.
Lowe arrives with a reputation for bold, attacking football and a proven track record in the EFL.
After catching the eye at Bury and Plymouth Argyle, he stepped up to the Championship with Preston North End before his most recent spell with Wigan.
The former Latics boss is now hungry for a quick return to the dugout and sees Northampton as the perfect stage.
STRONGLY LINKED
Former Bromley boss Andy Woodman, who also played for the Cobblers, has been strongly linked with the vacancy and remains under consideration.
But insiders insist Lowe has stolen a march after shining during the interview process.
Ex-West Bromwich Albion boss Darren Moore was also discussed earlier in the search, yet Northampton’s focus has now narrowed.
All signs point to Lowe being handed the reins. If the deal is pushed through, it will be seen as a major coup for the Cobblers and a clear signal of intent as they look to bounce back and climb the table next season.
Editor's Insight
With extensive League Two experience and two promotions on his CV with Bury and Plymouth Argyle, Ryan Lowe, despite being sacked by Wigan in February after a difficult spell, would still represent a safe pair of hands for Northampton as they look to bounce back following relegation into League Two.
