Chris Waddle, the former Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Sheffield Wednesday, Marseille and England legend, is among the names being considered for the managerial vacancy at one of the world’s most historic football clubs, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
After being acquired by Gino Maccio and Ashley Carson earlier this month, Hallam FC announced the departure of their popular head coach Craig Denton via social media yesterday.
And that, a number of well-placed sources last night told SportsBoom, could see Waddle approached about the possibility of succeeding him as part of a drive to raise the profile of a team whose ground is thought to be the oldest in the game.
With neighbours Sheffield FC recently unveiling Reverend and the Makers frontman Jon McClure as their chairman, a move exclusively predicted by this website, following a decision to reject a takeover led by Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, Hallam know a high-profile appointment would help them win the public relations battle now swirling through the city’s non-league scene as the musician’s brother, comedian and podcaster Steve Bracknell, also becoming increasingly involved at the Coach and Horses Ground.
Although it remains unclear if Waddle would be interested in the position given his media commitments, the 65-year-old did represent the NPL Division One East outfit towards the end of an illustrious career spanning St James’ Park, White Hart Lane, Hillsborough, the Stade Velodrome and also saw him capped 62 times by his country.
Huge Coup
Despite hailing from the North-East, Waddle has remained based in South Yorkshire since signing for The Owls in 1992 and is a well-known figure on the local football scene.
He did spend a brief spell in charge of Burnley during the late Nineties, but has not managed since, preferring instead to focus on his work as a commentator and expert analyst.
However, given Hallam’s status on the world scene, their derby with Sheffield FC is the oldest in football, the chance to return to the touchline on a part-time basis could prove tempting.
Carson, the youngster ever Master of Sheffield’s Assay Office, has previously held important roles at both Wednesday and Chesterfield while Maccio currently runs a recycling business.
Waddle also played for the likes of Sunderland, Bradford City, Falkirk and Torquay before retiring.

Shane is a seasoned sports journalist and one of the most recognisable voices in the snooker pressroom. From Ronnie O’Sullivan to Zhao Xintong, he has sat down with the sport’s biggest names and broken hundreds of front-page national stories.
Alongside his work for SportsBoom, Shane regularly freelances for national outlets including the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, and Daily Star.
While cricket is Shane’s true passion, particularly Test cricket, he keeps it largely separate from his professional work. But don’t expect him to be sold on The Hundred as the future of the game.
