Wolverhampton Wanderers' eight-year Premier League odyssey has ended like a total train wreck.
As the club braces itself for the gritty and bleak reality of the Championship, South Korean star Hee-chan Hwang has absolutely no intention of being part of this rebuilding phase.
He wants out, and he is expecting this departure to happen as soon as possible.
Hwang is planning to take every necessary step to secure an exit from Molineux this summer. While he remains grateful for his time in the West Midlands, the 30-year-old forward knows he doesn’t have a single season to waste in the second tier at this stage of his career.
He still has plenty to offer at the highest level, and his camp has already started working overtime for a "clean break."
Financial Pressure: Why are Wolves Ready to Sell?
Wolves are staring at a revenue loss of over £100 million from broadcasting rights alone. They are now forced to try and stay afloat in the Championship while carrying Premier League wages.
Hwang is one of the club's top earners, pocketing approximately £70,000 per week, and his contract runs until June 2028. For a Championship side, this wage bill is an impossible burden to carry.
Sources confirm that the board is ready to give the green light for a sale. They aren't just listening to offers, they are actively seeking an exit route to slash the wage budget by 50% in order to comply with financial sustainability rules.
The Transfer Market Strategy
Wolves will enter the summer window as a stubborn seller. They want to extract maximum value from the player to build their own transfer budget.
Although his value on paper appears to be in the €15-20 million range, the "relegation discount" is the unwritten rule of the transfer market.
The opening price will likely be €15 million; however, to get rid of the wage burden, they might say "yes" to a package involving £13 million plus bonuses.
Hwang’s quality remains highly prized in the Premier League market. His ability to lead the line as a center-forward or operate on the flank makes him a tactical "Swiss Army knife" for mid-table sides.
Fulham boss Marco Silva appreciates Hwang’s work ethic and tactical discipline. Fulham is looking to add more "aggression" to their frontline, and Hwang’s ability to press from the front seems a perfect fit for Silva’s system. Currently, talks are at the "sounding out" stage.
Brentford is also a club that is always in hot pursuit of a "value signing." They view Hwang as a proven Premier League goalscorer whose market value has been artificially deflated due to relegation. With Igor Thiago’s uncertain future and their search for a high-quality rotation player, Hwang is an ideal candidate.
Continental Interest and the Bundesliga Secret
The interest isn't limited to England.
Lazio are closely monitoring the player's situation. The Italian giants have been tracking Hwang since his RB Leipzig days. They see him as a perfect fit for the tactical structure of Italian football, a profile that combines intelligent runs with explosive pace. There is no official bid yet, but intermediaries have already begun researching the player's wage demands.
Furthermore, there is a secret Bundesliga suitor. At least two German clubs have made contact with Hwang’s camp. He still maintains a solid reputation in Germany due to his Red Bull system pedigree. If Premier League options hit a stalemate, returning to the Bundesliga, where he feels comfortable, remains a Plan B on the table.
Editor's Insight
There is a feeling that some of the noise around Hwang Hee-chan’s valuation could be driven by agent talk designed to keep the price closer to the €15m mark. Wolves’ relegation, combined with a noticeable dip in his goal and assist output last season, weakens their negotiating position considerably. Realistically, a Premier League club would likely view a deal in the region of £8m as fair value, though Bundesliga sides, where Hwang’s reputation remains stronger, may be willing to stretch beyond that figure.
