A blockbuster Premier League transfer battle is erupting as Liverpool and Newcastle United go head-to-head for Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, with the Argentina international available as a potential FREE transfer bargain this summer, SportsBoom can exclusively reveal.
Senesi’s current deal expires next month and, after rejecting THREE contract offers from the Cherries, the race is now on to snap up one of the Premier League’s most consistent centre backs for nothing.
SportsBoom understands Bournemouth are preparing a fourth and final contract proposal in a desperate bid to keep hold of the 28-year-old, but sources close to the situation believe the defender is increasingly likely to move on after four impressive seasons on the south coast.
That has alerted Liverpool and Newcastle, who both see Senesi as an experienced top flight operator available for a cut price deal in an inflated transfer market.
Liverpool are understood to be pushing hard behind the scenes as uncertainty continues to surround Ibrahima Konaté. The France international is approaching the end of his own contract and, despite talks over a renewal, no breakthrough has yet been reached.
Senesi is viewed as an ideal replacement at Anfield thanks to his Premier League experience, left footed balance and calmness in possession. The Reds also know him well through former Bournemouth recruitment chief Richard Hughes, now working at Liverpool, who originally helped bring the Argentine to England.
But Newcastle are determined to muscle their way into the deal.
DEPTH IN DEFENCE
Eddie Howe’s side want more strength and depth in defence ahead of another push for European football, and the chance to land an Argentina international without paying a transfer fee is viewed as a huge opportunity.
Bournemouth are still clinging to hope that their remarkable season can persuade Senesi to stay. The Cherries are firmly in the hunt for European qualification after an outstanding campaign under Andoni Iraola.
Speaking recently about Bournemouth’s ambitions, Senesi admitted the club’s rise had given the squad belief they could achieve something special this season. Team mate Marcus Tavernier also insisted the dressing room is dreaming of Europe, saying: “We want European football.”
Since arriving from Feyenoord in 2022, Senesi has made 126 appearances for Bournemouth, including 114 in the Premier League, scoring six goals and becoming a mainstay in central defence.
Now, unless Bournemouth can pull off a dramatic late turnaround in negotiations, Liverpool and Newcastle are ready to swoop for what could become one of the bargains of the summer transfer window.
Editor's Insight
On paper, a move to either Liverpool or Newcastle looks a strong fit for Senesi, with both clubs potentially seeking long-term upgrades in central defence amid uncertainty over Ibrahima Konaté at Anfield and Fabian Schär’s long-term role at St James’ Park.
